Chapter 18 Because the One You Hit Was My Dad

Margaret’s eyes darted away. “Isn’t that exactly it…”

Charlotte clenched her fists and shut her eyes.

She had the urge to hit someone.

No matter how bad Margaret was, she had still raised her.

And Anthony, he loved Charlotte from the bottom of his heart.

So from the very beginning, Charlotte had never planned to stand by and do nothing.

The reason she hadn’t told them where the huge sum of money came from-and why

she’d insisted on signing a loan contract-was to stop Margaret from treating her like an

ATM.

Otherwise, the moment something happened to the Smith family again, Charlotte would

be stuck filling an endless series of holes.

She didn’t want to spend the rest of her life as someone’s tool.

Even more, she didn’t want to be trapped by moral blackmail.

“Enough bullshit! Pay up, now! Or we’re not leaving!”

The leader shouted impatiently, his voice sharp and loud.

Charlotte forced her thoughts back and asked as calmly as she could, “Sir, can you give

us two more days? I’ll pay you back. I will.”

The man sized her up. “You? Your father can’t pay, and you think you can? How are you

gonna pay? Pay with your body?”

The room erupted in laughter.

“Even if she pays with her body, she’s not worth six billion.”

“Scumbags!” Anthony panted with rage. “How can you insult my daughter like that? You’re scumbags!”

The leader’s eyes crawled over Charlotte, but his words were aimed at Anthony.

“Yeah, we’re scumbags. So what? We take money, we do the job. Mr. Smith, you used to be a big shot, but now you owe money and won’t pay-looks to me like you’re a deadbeat. Even more shameless than a scumbag.”

Anthony almost couldn’t catch his breath. “You… you…”

“Mom.” Charlotte cut him off, stopping him from speaking. “Take Dad back to his room. I’ll handle this.”

For once, Margaret showed real worry.

“Be careful.”

“Okay.”

But Anthony refused to leave. “Charlie, you go back. You don’t need to deal with this.

Dad will handle it.”

Charlotte gave him a faint smile. “Dad, I’m the daughter you raised. It’s my turn to do

something for you. Just give me one chance, okay?”

Anthony looked into his daughter’s eyes-steady, fearless-and finally nodded.

Only after she saw Anthony enter the room did Charlotte speak again.

“The wound on my dad’s forehead. Who did that?”

The leader sprawled onto the couch, careless as ever, and spat onto the floor.

“He rushed up looking for trouble. I just gave him a little shove. Who knew he couldn’t

take it and smashed into the corner of the table? Don’t blame me for that.”

Charlotte stepped closer, looking down at him. “So, you hit him.”

The man unwrapped a piece of gum and tossed it into his mouth, not taking the fragile-

looking woman in front of him seriously at all.

“If that’s how you want to understand it, sure.”

Charlotte said, “Good.”

Before he could figure out what that “good” meant, his face took a hard slap.

The slap hit so cleanly it stunned him.

Even his underlings stared at each other, shocked. No one had expected Charlotte to

strike first.

That kind of nerve…

They thought she was insane.

The man shot to his feet, rubbed his cheek, then suddenly laughed.

The moment that smile froze, he lifted his hand high.

Facing such a beautiful woman, some of the men couldn’t help feeling a flicker of pity,

worried that one slap from him might break her.

But to everyone’s surprise, Charlotte didn’t even blink. She only let a name slip from her

perfectly shaped lips, light and cold.

“Potato Bruce.”

The man’s hand stopped in midair. His face turned to shock.

“How do you know our boss’s nickname?”

Charlotte’s smile wasn’t quite a smile. “You’re not qualified to know.”

To barge into the Smith house and throw their weight around like this, there was only

one debt-collection company in all of Sunriver that had the backing-and the guts.

And Charlotte had met that company’s boss, Potato Bruce, once.

More precisely, Potato Bruce owed Charlotte a favor.

Two years ago, every piece of critical data on Potato Bruce’s computer vanished.

It was the kind of thing that could decide whether he lived or died. He’d been so frantic

he was like an ant on a hot pan.

Because the data couldn’t ever see daylight, he went online looking for a computer

expert.

Charlotte happened to be bored, saw the post by accident, and took the job.

To her, it was nothing. Easy.

But to Potato Bruce, it was saving his life.

So he left her with one sentence: If you ever need anything, come to me.

But Charlotte had used a fake name back then.

So Potato Bruce had no idea she was Anthony’s daughter.

The leader had no choice but to look at the woman in front of him again.

Not servile, not arrogant. Bold.

And she was stunning-practically unreal. A woman like this was rare.

More than that, she’d said their boss’s little-known nickname. He couldn’t afford not to

be cautious.

Charlotte got straight to the point. “Give me two days. Six billion-I’ll pay every cent.”

The leader’s doubt was obvious. “You sure? Two days?”

“Yes. Two days.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because my home is here. My parents are here. If I break my word, you’ll have plenty of

ways to deal with me.”

The man thought for a while. “Fine! Two days it is. I’ll believe you once.”

Charlotte pulled her wallet from her bag and took out all the cash inside.

Scattered bills-altogether, a little over three thousand.

“Take this and treat your guys to a meal. Consider it a hard-work fee. But don’t think this

is compensation for that slap.”

“That slap was what you deserved.”

“Because the one you hit was my dad.”

The man stared at the money, suddenly not sure whether he should take it.
