Chapter 24 She Never Wanted to See Him Again

Charlotte left the moment she finished speaking. She didn’t see how Isabella’s face went
dead white because of those words.
The baby in Isabella’s arms suddenly started wailing-she was holding him too tightly.
Isabella was irritated to the point of snapping. She called the nanny over.
“Take him away. I don’t want to see him right now. He’s annoying as hell!”
The nanny, sticking to the rule of doing her job without running her mouth, carried the
screaming baby out.
Isabella still didn’t calm down.
She was furious.
That apartment in Moon Garden-sure, it wasn’t huge, but it sat in a location so rare you
couldn’t buy it with any amount of money.
And if the weather cooperated, she could sit quietly by the floor-to-ceiling windows every day and watch the most beautiful sunset melt into the river.
Isabella had planned to use giving birth to this child as leverage, then bring up buying
that apartment.
But deep down, she knew it. Matthew was never going to take her money.
Sure enough, he’d agreed fast.
She’d thought it was a done deal.
But somehow, Charlotte had snatched it right back.
Perfect. Now the apartment was gone, and Charlotte got to look like some heroic savior.
Even worse when Matthew had just left, he hadn’t even looked at the baby once.
The more Isabella thought about it, the angrier she got.
She couldn’t swallow it.
Charlotte was about to call Ruby when she saw Matthew push the door open and walk

Matthew sat down on the couch and lit a cigarette.

That face-angry, heavy with worry-was swallowed up by swirling smoke.
Charlotte didn’t speak. She walked over and opened the window.
The late-autumn wind rushed in, sharp with cold. Charlotte was dressed thin, and she
shivered.
Matthew slowly blew out a smoke ring, his brows locked tight. “Last night. Where did
you sleep?”
Charlotte sat in a chair a good distance away, not bothering to hide anything. “A hotel. If
you don’t believe me, go check the check-in records.”
Matthew said, “Early this morning, your best friend Ruby called me.”
Charlotte froze.
Why would Ruby call Matthew?
And she hadn’t even warned her first.
“She told me last night really was a misunderstanding. Gordon is her boyfriend. He
thought you were her and hugged the wrong person.”
Charlotte was so moved she didn’t even know what to say.
Ruby had actually used herself as a joke just to help her.
Matthew gave a half-smile that wasn’t a smile. “Didn’t expect your best friend to have
skills like that-landing some big-shot investor as a boyfriend. But Gordon might be
good at investing, and he’s even better at switching girlfriends. They probably…”
“Matthew.” Charlotte didn’t want to listen to his trash. She cut him off.
Matthew looked up at her.
Charlotte asked, “Have you ever truly loved someone?”
Matthew went still for a while.
“Why are you asking that all of a sudden?”

Charlotte gave a faint smile. “Nothing. Just suddenly wanted to ask.”
Matthew pressed his lips together and fell silent again.
The corner of Charlotte’s mouth curled into a mocking smile.
He loved Isabella.
But he didn’t dare admit it.

So what kind of love was that-how much of it was real, and how much of it was fake?
Charlotte changed the subject. “After the house transfer is done, I want to go out for a
while.”
Matthew asked, “Why do you suddenly want to go?”
“I haven’t gone anywhere in years,” Charlotte said. “So I want to.”
Matthew didn’t say much. “Fine.”
While she was gone for those few days, he also wanted to see whether he’d feel
uncomfortable with this woman not being around.
Charlotte quietly let out a breath.
In a couple of days, she was going to have an abortion. After the procedure, she’d
definitely need to rest for a few days-or it would be too easy for someone to notice.
That was why she’d used this excuse.
When the time came, she’d stay out a few days and settle everything without anyone
knowing.
Matthew stood and left.
“Get some sleep. Don’t forget tomorrow morning’s press conference.”
After Charlotte closed the door, she called Ruby.
“Are you insane?” Charlotte blurted. “Since when is Gordon-that playboy-your
boyfriend?”
Ruby laughed, all bright and smug. “It’s the only way to completely kill Matthew’s
suspicion. At a time like this, you can’t let him catch even one handle on you, or it’ll mess

up your plan.”
Charlotte was deeply moved.

Now, Ruby was the only one who could treat her like this-heart and soul.
“Ruby, I really… thank you.”
Ruby said, “Then treat me to a meal at Legend Hotel?”
Legend Hotel was the top five-star hotel in Sunriver.
Charlotte didn’t hesitate. “No problem, but you’ll have to wait until after my surgery.”
Ruby went quiet for a few seconds. “There’s really no room to reconsider?”
“No.” Charlotte’s answer was flat.
“Okay,” Ruby said. “When the time comes, I’ll go with you.”
“Mm.”
Then Ruby seemed to think of something, and her laughter grew even louder.
“But do you even have money right now to treat me at Legend Hotel?”
Only then did Charlotte remember.
Every cent in her pocket had been drained clean for the Smith family.
Right now, she was completely broke.
Charlotte said, “I’ll invite you, you pay? I’ll owe you first and pay you back later?”
“Works for me,” Ruby said.
The next morning, Charlotte accompanied Matthew to the press conference.
Facing the reporters’ sharp, nasty questions, Charlotte handled everything calmly-
smooth, effortless.
In front of the media, Charlotte took the initiative to loop her arm through Matthew’s,
smiling softly, sweet and obedient.
Matthew held her slim waist, eyes full of tenderness.

They looked disgustingly in love.
That press conference successfully salvaged Matthew’s public image.
When it ended, the gloom on Matthew’s face eased a lot.
