Chapter 31 Ture Color

Nathan barely hesitated. “Yes.”

The person who should’ve been furious suddenly laughed.

“I’m really glad you didn’t lie to me. Honestly, I’ve always known it-you don’t love me.”

In the car, the man’s brows tightened slightly, emotion pressed down so hard it showed.

Through the rearview mirror, Steven studied Nathan’s expression and, for no reason he

could name, felt a sting of sympathy.

He’d followed Nathan for so many years. He looked like he understood him. Yet

sometimes it felt like he didn’t understand him at all.

There were times when Nathan would sit alone for a long time.

He looked lonely. And so, so lost.

The call ended, and Nathan always frowned.

Charlotte returned to Love Bay, and the house was so quiet it felt wrong.

Mila hurried over. “Young Madam, why are you only getting back now? Something

happened.”

Charlotte stayed calm. “What happened?”

Mila said, “Joseph went to the hospital.”

Charlotte froze.

So the little guy was really sick? It wasn’t Isabella lying and playing games?

Charlotte went to her room and changed into loungewear. When she came out, she ran

straight into a whole group coming back from outside.

It really was a whole group.

Everly didn’t bother with anything-she charged up and pointed right at Charlotte’s nose

as she cursed.

“How can you be so cruel? Joseph is sick, and you still forced Matt to go through some transfer paperwork with you! You’re too selfish, too vicious!”

Charlotte glanced at Isabella.

Isabella’s eyes were red. She held the child tightly in her arms, guarding him like her

own life.

Lillian’s face looked terrible too, like she wanted to tear Charlotte apart.

“Bella, take the child back to your room first. Rest properly. Don’t let him catch a chill.

And you you must not get sick either. If anything happens to you, wouldn’t that be

exactly what someone wants?”

As Isabella passed by Charlotte, she stopped, then rolled up the child’s sleeve.

There were red rashes on his arm.

“Charlie, Joseph really is sick. But I didn’t want to affect you and Matt’s… important

business, so I specifically told Nat not to tell you.”

“Charlie, I’m sorry…”

Charlotte listened, completely confused.

What was this supposed to be?

A pity play?

Lillian felt so sorry for Isabella. “Bella, go back to your room. Why explain so much to

this cold-hearted woman? Besides, she already got what she wanted. Why would she

care about your apology?”

Charlotte had no way to defend herself. She could only watch Isabella return to her

room like a victor.

Lillian bristled with rage. “Luckily my great-grandson is fine today. If something had

happened, could you bear that responsibility?”

Charlotte snapped right back. “Bear what responsibility? Did I make your great grandson

get sick?”

Lillian shot back, “What responsibility? Why didn’t you let Matt come back the mund

he heard?!”

Charlotte looked straight at Matthew.

“I want to know exactly what you told them.”

Matthew looked like he wanted to explain, but under Lillian and Everly’s harsh stares, he

shut his mouth.

Natalie strutted forward like a fighting rooster.

“The second I heard, I told my brother right away. He wanted to come back, but you wouldn’t let him. You insisted he finish the transfer paperwork with you first.”

Charlotte stared at Matthew.

Matthew didn’t say a single word,

Charlotte was disappointed.

She didn’t want to explain.

And she didn’t feel like she owed anyone an explanation.

She’d calculated everything-except she hadn’t calculated that the child was actually

sick.

The more Lillian looked at Charlotte, the more irritated she became.

“As the eldest daughter-in-law, you’re narrow-minded, cold blooded, and ruthless You’re absolutely not the kind of daughter in law the Russell family wants!”

“If you don’t want to stay in the Russell family, then do as you please. The Russell family’s front door isn’t locked. You can leave anytime”

Tsk.

Her true colors finally showed.

So that was the real purpose of this whole show

Matthew stiffened when he heard it.

“Grandma! Charlie, she-”

“Shut up!” Lillian barked. “If you hadn’t been impulsive back then, you wouldn’t have married this kind of woman into our family. You’ve dragged the Russell family’s face

through the mud!”

Lillian doted on her precious great-grandson, and every word she threw was merciless.

Everly also felt wronged for her son.

“Mom, how can you blame Matt? It’s this woman who liked him and was dead set on

marrying into our family.”

As soon as she said it, Lillian’s gaze on Charlotte turned into pure contempt.

Charlotte replayed everything from start to finish, and suddenly found the key point.

She steadied her emotions perfectly and lowered her head.

“Grandma, Mom, I’m sorry. It’s my fault. I thought Joseph was being carefully taken care of and wouldn’t have any serious problems, so I figured a few extra minutes wouldn’t

matter.”

“Humph!” Everly rolled her eyes. “In your eyes, besides coveting the Russell family’s things, what else do you ever care about?”

Charlotte looked miserable. “I was negligent. Grandma, punish me.”

Lillian hadn’t expected the script to veer off her imagined path. She froze for a moment.

Charlotte said, “Or punish me by making me kneel. Like last time when Nat was

punished to kneel.”

That suggestion hit Natalie right where she liked it. “Yes! Grandma, make her kneel. Make her kneel until she truly knows she was wrong!”

Lillian said, “Since you say so, then-”

Charlotte cut in, “But next week I’m accompanying Matt to a charity event. If my knees get injured from kneeling and outsiders see it, wouldn’t rumors explode again? Then the image Matt just built-of a loving couple-would be destroyed again.”

Lillian’s breath caught in her throat, but she couldn’t refute it.

What this woman said did make sense.

Right now, the one thing they couldn’t afford to damage was Matt’s image.

Charlotte said, “Grandma, how about you punish me by making me go without food for a

day, and reflect in my room?”

Everly spoke before Lillian could.

“That’s letting you off easy!”
