Chapter 36 Animal
Charlotte had no choice but to take the loss.

There was food in her room, so she’d never even thought about having Mila bring
anything.
But Mila had only snuck it in because she cared about her.
And that made Charlotte feel guilty as hell.
She shot a look at the “hero” who’d run to tattle. For the first time in her life, she felt this
kind of disgust for someone.
Isabella’s expression switched fast.
“Charlie, I didn’t mean to do that. I was worried you’d starve, so I wanted to bring you
food, and then I saw Mila bringing it to you.”
“And Grandma happened to call back. I didn’t think much-I just said it.”
“Charlie, I’m sorry…”

Charlotte couldn’t take it anymore. “Shut up.”
It was that obvious, and she still had the nerve to act innocent and sweet.
Isabella got so scared she hid behind Matthew, clinging to him like some delicate little
thing.
Matthew looked mildly displeased. “Bella’s simple-minded. She didn’t think that much- she just told the truth. What did she do wrong?”
Lillian frowned and snapped.
“Charlotte! Get it straight. This isn’t your house. You don’t get to throw a fit here!”
A chill ran through Charlotte’s spine.
So that’s how it was. “Not your house.”
Everly’s face was full of mockery. “Do you think the Smith family was still the Smith
family from back then? Trying to act tough in the Russell family? You picked the wrong
place to be arrogant.”

Charlotte sneered, but thin pain threaded through her chest.

Even if the Smith family wasn’t as glorious as it used to be, they weren’t nothing. If her parents’ side truly cared about their daughter and were willing to back her up, maybe she wouldn’t have to live in the Russell family like this-swallowing every grievance.
Charlotte gave a chilly little laugh. “Don’t act like you’re better than me.”
“Charlotte!” Matthew strode over and grabbed her. “Enough of that.”
Then he leaned closer. “Did you forget what I told you last night?”
Charlotte tilted her head, smiling bitterly. “You mean, ‘let’s live well together”?”
Matthew caught the sarcasm in her eyes and his temper flared. “Then you should learn how to get along with everyone in the Russell family!”
Hah.
The smile on Charlotte’s lips was pure mockery.
Fine.
This was the Matthew she knew.
He never cared whether she hurt. Whether she felt wronged.
What he cared about was the Russell family’s business, and his white moonlight.
Not her-his disposable wife.
Charlotte finally understood.
This was just making an example out of someone.. A show, staged for her.
The more she cared about something, the more they wanted to take it from her.
Murder the body-no. Murder the spirit.
Typical Russell family old foxes.
Ruthless. Cold-blooded.
“Charlotte!” Lillian’s face hardened. “Lately, you’ve been getting more and more out of line. Where’s the gentleness a wife is supposed to have? I think you’re doing this on

purpose because you don’t want to go on living like this anymore. Isn’t that it?”
Again?
A provocation.
Charlotte knew it perfectly well. Even if the word divorce was right on the tip of her
tongue, she forced herself not to say it.
Right now, she absolutely couldn’t fall into their trap.
But the fury jammed in her chest had to go somewhere.
So she curved her lips like she was smiling, eyes full of disdain.
“Grandma, you’ve been saying the same thing a lot lately. Is it that I don’t want to keep
living with Matt… or is it that you don’t want me to keep living with him?”
Lillian froze, then shot Matthew a blaming look.
Yesterday, she had indeed talked to Matthew-her goal was to test his attitude.
What she hadn’t expected was that Matthew would oppose divorce.
That threw Lillian off.
“In this house, my husband is my backbone, so I only listen to him.” Charlotte
deliberately aimed her words at Matthew.
“If my husband is determined to get divorced, I won’t say a word against it. But if my
husband doesn’t want a divorce, I’m willing to stay by his side for the rest of my life.”
At the end, something shifted in Charlotte’s mind.
“Even if he makes mistakes in the future, I’ll forgive him and stay with him.”
That last sentence was like a piece of candy-sweet enough to melt on Matthew’s
tongue.
After all these years of marriage, he’d never once heard Charlotte say something so
moving.
And without meaning to, Matthew softened.
“Grandma, Bella’s parents will be here soon. Don’t make things unpleasant, or outsiders

will see us as a joke.”
After speaking, he deliberately glanced at Isabella.

Isabella got the message. Even though she hated it, she still put on her “good” face.
“Grandma.” Isabella walked to Lillian, hugged her arm, and pouted as she acted cute. “Okay, okay. It’s really not that big of a deal. We’re family. Little conflicts happen.”
“Grandma, Charlie already knows she was wrong, so don’t blame her anymore, okay?”
Listening to those words made Charlotte feel sick.
But she forced herself to stay silent.
If she kept snapping back, it would only ruin her plan.
Lillian’s expression finally eased a little, but her words were still ugly.
“Humph. If she knew she was wrong, the sun should rise in the west. Today I’ll let it go
-for Bella’s sake.”
“Bella’s parents are coming. If you can’t keep a pleasant face, then you’d better not show
up in this house for now.”
Those words hit exactly what Charlotte wanted.
“Then I’ll go stay at my parents’ place for two days. That way I won’t ruin your mood.”
Lillian responded, “Do whatever you want.”
How could Charlotte still have an appetite? She dragged her stiff legs, step by step, back
toward her room.
Behind her was a pack of wolves and tigers, wishing they could swallow her whole.
They were declaring ownership. Forcing her to compromise. Forcing her to give up this
marriage on her own.
