Charlotte continued lazily, “Honestly, you’ve been aiming at the wrong target. You
shouldn’t be wasting your little tricks on me.”
“You should be doing everything you can to win Matthew’s love.”
“Make him so set on you that he won’t marry anyone else.”
“That’s the smart play.”
Charlotte bent down and leaned close to Isabella’s ear.
“What Matthew likes about you is your sweet, obedient, cute act, right? But if he ever
finds out the woman he likes is a vicious snake with a rotten heart, full of schemes like a poisonous witch… then you’ll lose everything in one shot, won’t you?”
Isabella dug her nails into her palm, hatred grinding in her chest, but she couldn’t
explode.
Standing in front of Charlotte, she felt like she’d been pushed a head shorter.
Why?
She was the precious princess of the Jones Group.
And Charlotte was nothing more than an adopted stray from the Smith family.
So why did this woman have such overwhelming presence?
Matthew walked over. When he saw how close the two of them were, he laughed.
“Made up?”
Charlotte didn’t understand.
Made up?
Isabella reacted fast.
“Matt, I already apologized to Charlie. She forgave me, so you can’t scold me anymore,
okay?”

Matthew replied without thinking, “When have I ever scolded you?”
The gloom on Isabella’s face instantly eased.
She walked up to Matthew and naturally hooked onto his arm.
“Matt, Mom and Dad are coming today. You have to treat them well. I’ve been telling
them you treat me even better than a real big brother does.”
Matthew smiled brightly. “Of course. Perfect timing-I need to talk to your parents about
that land in the southern suburbs.”
Isabella asked, “That land still isn’t secured? I heard my dad say it was basically settled.”
The moment it came up, Matthew’s smile faded a little.
“It was almost settled. But last night, your dad called and said the other side changed
their mind.”
“Huh? How could that happen? What do they even mean?”
Matthew sighed. “If we could figure out what they’re thinking, it’d be easy. The most frustrating part is we don’t know anything.”
The person handling the deal had clearly spent a fortune greasing the right palms.
Signing the contract should’ve been a matter of a day or two.
So how did it suddenly flip like that?
Matthew was completely confused.
Charlotte listened, saying nothing.
A servant called everyone to breakfast.
The voice was unfamiliar, and Charlotte’s heart dropped.
That wasn’t Mila.
A strange middle-aged woman came out of the kitchen.
When she saw Matthew and the others, she plastered on a smile.
“Young Master, Second Young Madam, breakfast is ready.”

She acted like Charlotte-the eldest young madam-didn’t exist at all.

Matthew wasn’t surprised. “Kenna, where are Grandma and the others?”
Kenna said, “The old madam and the madam are eating upstairs. Miss is still sleeping.”
Matthew asked, “Why aren’t they coming down to eat together?”
Kenna didn’t even bother to dodge it. “The old madam said she didn’t want to get
annoyed looking at certain people.”
Every gaze turned to Charlotte.
Charlotte didn’t care what they said. She only asked, “Where’s Mila?”
An unnatural look crossed Matthew’s face.
“Mila said she’s getting old and doesn’t want to work anymore. She resigned on her own
and went back to her hometown.”
Bullshit.
How could Charlotte believe that?
“You kicked Mila out?”
Kenna’s eyes raked over Charlotte openly, with none of the tact a servant should have.
“Is the eldest young madam dissatisfied with how I serve?”
Charlotte snapped, “Shut your mouth!”
Kenna froze. “Eldest Young Madam, even if I’m a servant, I’m still distantly related to the old madam and the madam. You should at least show basic respect.”
Charlotte didn’t give her an inch.
Anger filled her chest until she lost all restraint.
Overnight, the staff in the house had been replaced.
There was no way Mila would leave without even telling her-just gone.
Charlotte swept a cold gaze over her. “Since you know you’re a servant, then watch your mouth and your behavior. I don’t care what ‘distant relative’ you claim to be. In my eyes,

“So you’d better keep your mouth shut.”
“You!” Kenna flew into a rage.
No wonder, before coming, the old madam had warned her there was a jinx in the
Russell family she needed to be wary of.
Kenna cursed inwardly.
She really wasn’t anything good.
“Matthew!” Charlotte’s chest ached. “Mila raised you. She treated you like her own son.
How could you do this to her?”
Matthew was angry too, and he blurted out the truth.
“Grandma and Mom both think Mila is too old and too slow now, so they wanted to
replace her. What was I supposed to do?”
Matthew had only found out last night.
Lillian told him clearly. “Since after all these years Mila still couldn’t be won over, then
she didn’t need to keep working.”
Matthew didn’t want to lose Mila either.
But what he couldn’t bear to lose even more was his standing in Lillian’s heart-because
of an outsider.
Charlotte forced herself to calm down, and suddenly understood something.
“Is it because Mila secretly brought me food yesterday, so you made an example of her
to scare everyone?”
Matthew’s face darkened. “You were the one who said you wouldn’t eat for a day and would stay shut in to reflect. Then you had Mila secretly bring you food. When you get down to it, isn’t it you who dragged Mila into this? Who are you blaming?”
Charlotte’s chest felt so tight she could barely breathe.
Yes. She had dragged Mila into this.
