The apartment smelled like a bakery.
I sucked in another deep breath and let out a sigh. It was a scent I missed most before my Mother got married to John. She used to work at a bakery and I would always tag along because she didn’t have enough money to pay for a babysitter.
Those were the only times I remembered her actually being happy.
“Tell me, Daisy, do you have any siblings?”
My eyes snapped over to Allister. “I have a stepsister.”
“Are you close?” He tilted his head to the side as he waited for me to answer.
“Not really.” I glanced at Elias. “She’s a good actor but in private she’s really mean.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
I smiled. “It’s okay. I prefer it that way.
“So you’re a bit of a loner like our Elias.”
It was on the tip of my tongue to deny it, but I nodded instead. Hiding away in my room all day made me a loner, didn’t it? Except now things had changed because I spent most of my days with Elias and my nights with all of them whenever Alex and Valiant made it home.
Allister didn’t say anything else. His focus went back to the TV.
I found my eyes locking on Elias as he moved around the kitchen with ease. They were talking softly about something that made him blush, and sometimes laugh softly.
He hadn’t even glanced my way once.
Swallowing, I stood and made my way over to the kitchen. My first offer to help was declined but hopefully, my second offer would be accepted.
“C–can I help with anything?”
“No,” Sylvia instantly answered.
“No thank you, honey,” Bee answered more gently. “We’re about done.”
“O–okay.” I took a step back.
“You can help me with the decorations,” Elias said before I could turn away. “Let me just finish this, flower.”
I nodded, eyes dropping to his hands to watch him mix the dough.
Such strong hands. Neatly trimmed nails. Hands that have touched me and pleasured me before.
With my heart racing a mile a minute, I turned away. I took slow deep breaths to try and calm myself. It wasn’t appropriate to be having that kind of thoughts with his parents in the room.

“The bag with decorations is by the front door,” Bee told me.
I gave her a small smile and then hurried out of the room.
The moment I was out of sight, I leaned against the wall and blew out a breath. Why was it so hard for me to make small talk? Why couldn’t I be like Valiant? Why couldn’t I talk to their parents like I had talked to them the night we first met?
“It can’t be that bad,” Elias muttered when he joined me.
I looked up at him. “They hate me.”
“Hate is a strong word.”
I gave him a look that made him chuckle.
Elias stepped closer and placed his hands on my hips. “Sylvia takes a while to warm up to someone. We’ve had our fair share of disaster dates due to Val bringing home gold diggers.”
“Gold diggers?” My eyes widened. “You’re not billionaires, are you?”
He said nothing.
Horror flashed through me. Alex was well–known and so was Valiant, but that didn’t mean that they made millions.
“Elias, are you serious?” I whispered.
“Well, now we know you’re certainly not after our money.‘
I slapped him. “It’s not funny!”
“Daisy-”
“This is bad,” I whispered. “Do you know how bad this is? Everybody-”
“Knows us, yes,” he interrupted. “We try our best to stay out of the public eye and keep our private life private. We’re not well known for our money, flower.”
“It doesn’t matter what you’re well known for, you still are.”
Blowing out a breath, he took a step closer. He pushed a strand of hair behind my ear and silently studied me.
“Daisy, breathe.” His fingers slowly slipped down my cheek. “I promised you that I’ll take care of you and I’m not planning on breaking that promise.”
“I don’t want the past to be repeated.”
He pressed his lips to my forehead. “It won’t.”
It was easy for him to say those things because he didn’t know what was going to happen tomorrow or the next day or the day after that.
“You’re overthinking things again.”

I pressed my face to his chest and nodded. “Can’t help it.”
“I know.”
Elias rubbed his cheek against the top of my head as he hugged me. He rubbed my back with one of his hands and slipped his other to the back of my neck where he rubbed my skin with his thumb.
“I want you to take a deep breath and clear your head,” he whispered. “Try living in the now and not in the what ifs. I know Sylvia can be a little rough around the edges, but I promise you that you’ll like her once she opens up.”
“I feel out of place,” I told him. “They all know who I am and I know nothing of them.”
“You’ll get to know them. Just be yourself, flower.”
Whatever I wanted to say was forgotten when the front door opened. Valiant was the first to enter, followed closely by Alex.
A gasp fell from my lips and my knees weakened when I got a good look at him.
Alex pressed a finger to my lips, silencing me. Elias stepped towards Alex, brows dipped into a frown.
“What the hell happened?” he hissed.
“I need to take a shower,” Alex muttered instead of answering him.
“We have company.”
“I know.” Alex looked at Val. “He’s going to distract them for a bit so I can sneak off and take a shower.”
Elias glanced at him as he walked passed us. A loud exclamation followed his entrance. Alex winked at me and then disappeared down the hall and into his bedroom.
“Elias?” I questioned.
He took hold of my hand and guided me in the direction of Alex’s room. When we entered the bedroom, he closed the door and locked it.
I followed him into the bathroom and watched as he pulled a first–aid box from underneath the sink.
“What happened?” he asked Alex.
“Some bastard jumped me,” he muttered from the shower. “Wasn’t prepared for it otherwise I would have kicked his ass.”
“Someone we know?”
Elias was busy packing things onto the counter. It looked like he knew exactly what he was doing.
How many times has this happened before?
The water shut off and a second later Alex climbed out of the shower. He grabbed a towel, wrapped it around his waist, and then reached for another to dry his hair and then his torso.
My eyes traced every inch of his exposed skin, I couldn’t help it. But then I located the wound that had been the

source of the blood soaking his shirt.
Swallowing, I took a step back to lean against the wall. Spots appeared in my line of vision but I blinked them away.
Alex has taken a seat on the toilet. He was leaned back casually while Elias tended to his wound.
I tried not to look, but my eyes dropped.
Dizziness threatened to overwhelm me.
“It’s not that deep,” Elias muttered. “Just a scratch.”
“Bastard doesn’t know how to use a knife. If he did, I would probably be on the way to the hospital now.”
“He wanted to s–stab you?” I croaked.
Their eyes snapped in my direction. It was almost as if they had forgotten that I was in the room with them.
“I have a lot of people who hate me,” Alex told me.
Elias scolded him.
Rolling his eyes, Alex held his hand out towards me. “Come here, baby girl.”
I took a step forward, eyes once again dropping to his wound, and before I knew it, the floor was rushing up to catch me and my vision darkened.

Someone was stroking my hair.
It was the first thing I noticed when consciousness came rushing back. I frowned and opened my eyes to blink at the ceiling. Once my vision cleared, I looked to my right to see Alex leaning back against the pillow with a tablet in his free hand.
I licked my lips and turned onto my side to press my face against his thigh.
“How are you feeling?” Alex asked as he placed the tablet aside.
“I should be asking you that.”
He started stroking my hair again. “I’m fine, Daisy–girl.”
I came to notice that he only called me that when he wanted to change the topic.
“Did Elias need to stitch you up?”
“It doesn’t need stitches,” he answered.
“You were bleeding a lot,” I whispered, placing my hand on his knee. “Usually when you bleed that much you need stitches.”
“I’m a bleeder.”

I tilted my head back to look up at him. “Where’s Elias?”
“Helping our parents to put up the decorations for my surprise party.”
I frowned at him. “You already know about it, so it’s not a surprise anymore.”
“True, but they love doing it.” His eyes darted over my face. “None of us has ever had birthday parties when we were little. It’s our tradition. No matter how old we get, they still throw us birthday parties. I just asked them to keep it small and to do it here instead.”
“Because of me?”
“Partly yes. And because I don’t want to take the chance of someone invading their privacy.”
“But anyone could’ve seen them come up here.”
Alex shook his head. “They came in through the front building. If someone is watching the front of the building, they would assume that they’re just visiting someone in the building.”
I thought over his words. “So the media doesn’t know what your parents look like?”
“No, and we try our best to keep it that way.”
Pulling away, he moved down the bed to settle on his side next to me.
My eyes instantly dropped to his injured side.
“I’m fine, baby girl. Elias gave me some painkillers.”
“What happened?” I asked after a few minutes of silence.
Alex swallowed loudly and hesitated a moment before he reached out to wrap an arm around my waist.
“Valiant told me that you don’t know much about me and I would like to keep it that way. I own a few hotels and casinos. My biological father was a…very bad man. I grew up around it until he decided that he didn’t want me. He shipped me off to my mother but she wasn’t fit to look after a kid. His name and his reputation got stuck with me when I started my own business.” He paused. “I used it to my advantage and now I regret it. There are a lot of men who hate him and they hate me just because I’m his blood. But despite that, I have made a few of my own enemies while building up my…empire.”
“So the man who attacked you is one of your enemies.”
He leaned forward and pressed his lips to my forehead. “You don’t have to worry about this.”
“Elias told me that you’re billionaires,” I whispered, making him smile. “That’s another reason why I’m not the right omega for you.”
Alex hummed. “Because we’re rich and can buy you anything your omega heart desires.”
“Because with money comes fame, and I don’t want to be cast in the spotlight as your omega. Being bonded to you means that if I decide to go somewhere, everybody will know that I’m yours, and my nightmare will start all over again.”
