Daisy stirred, making my eyes snap open.

I held my breath as I stared at her, waiting for her eyes to open. But they didn’t. She turned onto her back and sighed. I stared at her for a few more seconds before I leaned back in the chair.

Movement from the corner of my eyes caught my attention.

David hovered in the doorway, eyes darting over Daisy and then to me.

How long is she going to be asleep?I asked him.

For another hour at least,he answered. I gave her a strong dose because I didn’t know how long it would have taken you to get here. Your omega made it clear that she didn’t want another alpha to touch her.

My lips twitched but I didn’t smile. Despite Daisy’s constant claim that she wasn’t the right omega for us, already accepted us as her alphas.

Let her sleep, I made some coffee,David muttered.

Got anything stronger?I asked him as I stood.

No.

I followed him out of the room and down the hall to the living room. David nodded towards a tray on the coffee tabel. Help yourself to milk and sugar.

Picking up a cup, I took a seat on the single couch and took a sip. David hesitated a moment before he sat down. He studied me just as I studied him.

You were a service alpha?

His eyes narrowed. You don’t have to fill the silence with small talk.

It’s not small talk,I told him. I’m just curious about the alpha who decided to help our omega instead of taking advantage of her.

David sighed as he rubbed his thick beard but he remained silent.

The drug you gave herhow long will it last?

Long enough for you to get her home. She already reached the highest peak of her heat.

Disappointment hit me. I was hoping that she would allow us to take care of her during her heat. I was hoping to prove to her that she belonged to us. She was the perfect omega for our pack.

There should be no complications when her second heat approaches,he said softly. I hope you’ll be better prepared.

I glared at him. We were prepared. She wanted to take suppressants and we respected her choice. The things that happened with Johnthat was unexpected. Everything to take him down had been planned but he got a jump on us.

Always be prepared for the unexpected,David muttered.

Why are you living here in the middle of nowhere?

David stood. I welcomed you in my home, took care of your omega and I’m letting you stay here until she is ready to leave. Please respect my wishes and stay out of my private life.

With that said, he picked up his cup and walked away. I stared down at the cup in my hands. I understood the need for privacy and I wanted to respect his privacy, but I was curious about the man.

There had to be a reason for him to be living up in the mountains all by himself. He used to be a service alpha which meant that it had been his job to take care of omegas in heat who didn’t have a pack or who decided to spend their heat with an alpha instead of relying on suppressants.

I knew there was something more about him.

All we had on him was his name. He didn’t give us a surname.

I sighed and downed the rest of the cold coffee. Placing the cup down, I stood and made my way back to Daisy’s room. She was still in the same position as she was in when I left.

Sinking down on the couch, I blew out a breath. I was in such a hurry to get to Daisy that I forgot to grab my pain killers. My leg was throbbing. Not that it matter, I wasn’t planning on taking any pills until Daisy was safe and sound back home with Val and Elias to look after her.

If I hadn’t taken my pills then Derek would have never been able to grab her. Then again, if he hadn’t taken her then John would have gotten to her.

If that bastard wasn’t dead already, I would have had fun torturing him to death for what he had done to Elias. Hopefully he was burning in hell.

With John dead, most of our problems were over and done with. I knew that there were still going to be things to test our relationship, but we were going to work through that.

Now all we had to do was convince Daisy to stay.

Something soft brushed against my forehead and then slowly moved down the side of my face to my lips. I sucked in a breath, fighting the urge to wake up. I was so fucking tired.

The softness was replaced by something warm and firm.

It parted my lips and allowed something warmer to slip into my mouth.

A groan fell from my lips.

Reaching up, I gripped the back of her neck and took control of the kiss. Daisy moaned, her arms slipping around my neck as her body melted against mine.

Breaking the kiss, I pulled away to stare up at her.

How are you feeling?I asked her.

Better now that you’re here,Daisy whispered. When Derek told me that he couldn’t get a hold of you, I thought something bad had happened.

My eyes darted away. Something bad had happened she just didn’t know it yet, and I wasn’t sure how to tell her about it. So I kissed her again instead.

Daisy sighed.

Too soon she pulled away and frowned down at me.

Something did happen, didn’t it?she asked. Are you mad at me because another alpha touched me? I asked

Derek not to but David-

I know what he did and I’m not mad at you,I interrupted her. Daisy, John is dead.

She blinked, once, twice and then she smiled. That means that he won’t come after me again?

Yes. The messages you received was sent by him from a burner phone. We figured that he was trying to scare you into going back home. He owed a lot of people money and he promised an omega as payment.

The smile slipped from her face. Wwon’t those people come after me then?

I’m very doubtful that they will. An omega was promised to them, he hadn’t been specific about what omega. I highly doubt they will come after you. John has nothing left.

Resting her head on my shoulder, she tugged on the buttons of my shirt.

Where’s Val and Elias?

They’re at the hospital.

I gripped her hips to stop her from moving away.

Elias was injured when we went after John,I lied.

We need to go,she cried, pushing at my chest.

Daisy,I growled. Val is with Elias.

How badly is he injured? Was he shot? Is he going to be okay?

I hesitated which was a mistake.

It’s bad, isn’t it?

Tears filled her eyes as she stared down at me, waiting for a reply. Reaching up, I cupped her cheeks and wiped the tears away with my thumbs. There was no use lying to her any more because once we got home, she was going to see the extend of the damage for herself.

He’s going to be okay and that’s all that matters.

But it’s bad.

Baby girlI trailed off when a sob fell from her lips.

Pulling her close, I held her tightly as she cried. What felt like hours later but was in reality only a few minutes later, her tears dried down. I was surprised to find her fast asleep.

My eyes darted from her to the bed.

I sighed. Shifting slightly, I let out another groan. My back was starting to protest the uncomfortable position.

Here, let me help you.

David suddenly appeared at my side, reaching for Daisy.

I tensed, a low growl escaping before I could stop it.

David paused, eyes narrowing.

I swallowed and then gave him a stiff nod.

He hesitated a moment longer and then carefully picked her up and turned to lower her to the bed. When he was done, he turned and held his hand out towards me.

Might as well get comfortable,David muttered. Still a few hours left till daylight.

I reached down to pull of my shoe and then took his hand so he could help me to my feet. Hopping over to the bed, I carefully lowered myself onto it.

David left the room and then returned with a few pillows he placed under my injured leg.

Thank you,I muttered.

With a last glance at Daisy, he walked out of the room and pulled the door closed behind him.

Daisy sighed and turned onto her side. I smiled when she instantly wrapped an arm around my waist and buried her face in the crook of my neck.

Turning my head, I pressed a kiss to her hair and closed my eyes. I needed to get some rest because it was going to be a long drive home.
