Chapter 114 The Hidden Estate

“I’m fine,” Quinn said quickly.

Lucy winked at her and exaggeratedly glanced sideways.

Quinn stared back, confused.

She had no idea what Lucy was trying to say. Julian had already pulled the car onto the road.

Using the angle where Julian could not see her, Lucy secretly pointed her thumb toward him.

Then she mouthed silently, “Handsome?”

Quinn felt the heat rising to her face again.

Handsome?

That word barely covered it. He was the kind of handsome that made your knees feel weak.

She might avoid men and dislike physical closeness, but she still had eyes. Still, Lucy was asking her this question right in front of Julian.

Even if he could not see them, Quinn could never say something like that out loud.

Lucy kept making ridiculous faces, waiting for an answer.

Quinn had no choice. She nodded quickly.

A calm but firm voice came from the front.

Sit properly.”

Lucy immediately snapped back into position. She faced forward and sat upright like a disciplined student.

But her mouth refused

to

stay quiet.

“Julian,” she said, “if you keep acting this scary, you’re never going to get a girlfriend.”

Julian glanced at her briefly.

Lucy had always thought Julian was almost unfairly good-looking. His presence alone could silence a

room.

But he was too cold. Too distant.

Whenever he looked at people, there was an invisible pressure behind his gaze that pushed them away.

Lucy was scared of him.

Quinn was scared of him too. And he would not even let them sit together in the back.

So petty.

Let’s see how long it takes before someone finally tames you.

Of course Quinn was not divorced yet.

So there was no hurry.

Lucy sat in the passenger seat, letting her imagination run wild.

Julian focused on driving.

When the car stopped at a red light, he rested one hand on the steering wheel and glanced casually into the rearview mirror.

Quinn was looking out the window.

She sat quietly, her posture relaxed but distant.

There was a calmness about her that almost felt detached from the world.

Julian could tell that Quinn wasn’t happy. Between the problems with her family, the ongoing divorce, and now someone like Harold Whitman showing up to stir up trouble, it seemed as if every hardship somehow ended up falling on her shoulders. The thought made Julian’s chest tighten again, a feeling that never truly seemed to leave him. The drive took a while.

The last stretch of road twisted through several narrow turns before finally opening into a quiet courtyard.

When Quinn stepped out of the car, she looked around in disbelief.

She had lived in Lakeshore City for years.

She never knew a place like this existed in the middle of such a crowded, expensive city.

It felt like stepping into a hidden retreat.

Lucy hooked her arm through Quinn’s and began explaining excitedly.

“Sorry, sorry,” Lucy said with a grin.

Then she leaned closer with curiosity sparkling in her eyes.

“But Julian, I have to say something. This is the first time I’ve

ever seen you dress like that.”

She lowered her voice conspiratorially. “Did you do it because of Quinn?”

Julian did not believe there was anything embarrassing about dressing well for someone you liked.

He simply did not want Quinn to think he looked old.

Sometimes it would not hurt to look a little younger. He said nothing. Which was basically confirmation.

Lucy burst out laughing.

“Julian, look at you,” she teased. “All dressed up like you’re trying to impress Quinn.”

It was not wrong. But hearing it from Lucy still made Julian feel slightly awkward.

“Enough,” he said.

Lucy laughed even harder. It was rare to catch Julian like this.

Even rarer to see him look mildly embarrassed. She leaned closer again.

“Listen to me. You can’t keep that serious face all the time. I’m scared of you. Quinn is scared of you too.”

She lowered her voice. “How are you planning to win someone over like that?”

Julian already knew the answer. From Quinn’s attitude alone, it was obvious.

She was keeping a careful distance from him.
