Chapter 149 The Sketchbook

Quinn moved before she even thought about it.

In two quick strides she reached the desk, grabbed the sketchbook, and pulled it tightly against her chest.

The reaction alone told Julian more than enough.

He had already suspected that the last drawing she made was another portrait of him.

Now he was certain.

But seeing how fiercely she guarded the sketchbook, he did not dare ask to see it anymore.

Finish packing.” Julian said calmly. I’ll wait outside.

He did not stay for a response.

The door opened, then closed again a second later. Silence settled over the room.

Quinn remained where she stood, clutching the sketchbook. A moment later her strength seemed to drain away, and she leaned back against the desk.

If Julian had insisted on seeing the drawings, he could have taken the notebook easily.

He had the advantage in height. More importantly, the difference in strength between them was obvious.

If he really wanted to take it, she would not have been able to stop him.

But he let it go.

Quinn slowly exhaled. At least the last bit of her dignity had been preserved. Or had it?

She had reacted so strongly, almost desperately trying to hide it.

Julian was sharp. He probably already figured it out.

Her face flushed hot, then pale again moments later. Her back felt damp with sweat even as a chill crept over her skin.

All she wanted was distance from Julian. Yet somehow, again and again, circumstances kept pushing them into these awkward moments of closeness.

Close enough to make her uneasy every time.

Why does it keep happening?

Julian waited outside for more than ten minutes.

Finally the door opened. Quinn stepped out quietly, pulling her suitcase behind her. Her head stayed lowered the whole time.

Julian reached out immediately. I’ll carry it.

Quinn did not refuse.

But instead of handing him the suitcase directly, she set it down first, then stepped a couple of feet to the side before speaking.

Thank you.

Julian noticed the small movement and the subtle way she avoided looking at him, but he didn’t comment on it. Instead, he simply picked up the suitcase and walked ahead of her in silence. The same thought lingered in his mind. Quinn was still married, and until that changed, there were things he could not say and things he could not allow himself to do. Even so, a quiet sense of satisfaction lingered in his chest.

Quinn had drawn him more than once, and the drawings had been detailed, careful, almost intimate, the kind that could only come from someone who had spent time observing him closely.

Before this, she had always seemed uncomfortable around him, sometimes even resistant to being near him, which had made Julian worry that she might actually dislike him. But if she could sit there and study his face long enough to capture it that carefully, then she probably didn’t hate him after all.

No artist willingly spends that much time drawing something they truly dislike.

Even so, nothing could be said yet.

Everything would have to wait until she ended her marriage and became free again.

Only then could anything else begin.

When they reached the building entrance, the driver and bodyguard stepped forward and took the luggage from them.

Julian opened the car door for Quinn.

Go ahead.”

Quinn got into the back seat. At this point, her mindset had shifted into something close to resignation.

Things between her and Julian were already awkward enough. Pretending to maintain some polite distance felt almost pointless now.

Still, she had no intention of letting any further physical contact happen.

That boundary would stay firmly in place.

What she did not expect was what happened next.

After she settled into the back seat, neither the driver nor the bodyguard got into the car. Instead, Julian walked around to the front and opened the driver’s door.

He got in. He was driving himself,

Quinn immediately felt uncomfortable.

With Julian driving and her sitting in the back seat, it almost looked like she was treating him as her driver.

Just sit back.Julian said as he started the engine. You look tired. Take a nap if you want.

He had noticed. Quinn felt slightly surprised.

A man who stood at the top of the social ladder, someone used to people accommodating him, was paying attention to something as small as her discomfort.

That level of thoughtfulness caught her off guard.

It also reinforced something she had already suspected. Julian lived a very disciplined life. There had never been rumors about women around him.

Which probably meant he had never experienced the kind of situation that had happened between them.

Their accidental intimacy had likely sparked his curiosity.

That part made sense.

But Quinn had neither the time nor the emotional space to play along with something like that.

Julian had power, wealth, and freedom.

If he wanted to treat relationships like a game, he had every resource in the world to do it.

She did not.

Quinn was the kind of person who could not separate feelings from physical closeness.

Some people could share a bed with someone they did not love.

She could not. For her, physical intimacy only made sense when it came with real feelings. When it meant building a life together.

But she and Julian? That was impossible.

A man like him probably already had a marriage arranged by his family. A strategic match between powerful families.

Whether affection existed or not would not matter much.

Public harmony would be maintained. Privately, each person might live their own life.

People in those circles often did. Quinn wanted nothing to do with that kind of relationship.

That was one of the reasons she kept trying to stay away from Julian.

The things that had already happened between them were accidents she had not controlled.

Including the night she drank too much.

Quinn had already made up her mind that from now on, if Julian was going to be at a dinner, a gathering, or any kind of gettogether, she simply wouldn’t go. Not even Lucy could talk her into it.

What Quinn didn’t realize at that moment was that sometimes avoiding someone doesn’t actually keep them away. If she refused to go out, then Julian would simply find another way to show up in her life.

When they arrived at Lucy’s building, he helped carry her luggage upstairs. After that, he didn’t stay or say much, and soon left.
