Quinn finally let out a long breath of relief.

Lucy was practically glowing with excitement now that Quinn had moved back. She had just been about to sit down and chat when her phone rang.

It was Julian.

Lucy blinked. He had just left, so why was he calling already? Did something happen?

She answered, “Julian?”

“Is Quinn with you?” he asked. “Go to your room to take this call.”

Lucy had no idea what he was up to, but she did as he said. “Okay.”

She turned to Quinn. “Quinn, I need to take this.”

Quinn nodded quickly. “Go ahead. I’ll finish unpacking.”

Lucy walked into her room and closed the door behind he

“So what’s going on?”

“I’ll come over in a bit and cook,” Julian said. “Just tell Quinn we already planned it.”

“You’re coming over to cook?” Lucy gasped. “You’re actually cooking yourself?”

The last time Veronica had mentioned it, Lucy had thought she’d never be lucky enough to taste Julian’s cooking. And now suddenly the opportunity had arrived.

Then Julian added calmly, “Once the food’s ready, eat a few bites and then find an excuse to leave.”

“Julian!” Lucy immediately protested. “So you’re just using me and tossing me aside afterward?”

“Shouldn’t you feel honored?” he replied.

“Honored for being used?” Lucy grumbled. “At least let me eat a proper meal first.”

“You’re always thinking about food,” Julian said. “Fine. You can eat. Just eat fast.”

“Julian, I want BBQ ribs!”

“You look like BBQ ribs.”

“Not just me. Quinn loves it too!”

“Got it.”

After the call ended, Lucy made a face. “So unfair.”

Of course, she only dared complain when Julian wasn’t around. Saying something like that to his face was completely out of the question.

A moment later she headed back to Quinn’s room. As they spread the bedsheets together, Lucy said casually. “Quinn. Julian’s coming over later.”

Quinn paused. “Didn’t he just leave?”

“Julian,” Lucy said. “We talked about it earlier. He’s cooking dinner for us tonight. After dropping you off, he went to buy groceries.”

“Well…”

Lucy rubbed the tip of her nose guiltily.

“Oh come on, don’t feel awkward,” Lucy said quickly. “Julian’s basically family to you too. And you know how good his cooking is. A free personal chef, how great is that?”

Quinn finished smoothing the bedsheet and sat down on the edge of the bed. “Lucy, actually there’s something I wanted to ask you.”

Lucy nodded immediately. “Sure. What is it?”

“I know you and Julian are very close,” Quinn said slowly. “But after everything that’s happened… I don’t really want to face him right now. When he comes later, maybe I should step out for a while.”

“What?” Lucy froze.

If Julian arrived and found Quinn gone, he might actually kill her.

But Quinn was her best friend. She couldn’t ignore her feelings either.

Fine. Just this once. After today she wouldn’t help Julian again.

“Quinn,” Lucy said seriously, “I’m really happy you moved back today. Julian coming over was just a spur- of–the–moment thing. In the future… even if he wants to come, I won’t let him. I swear.”

Quinn laughed softly. “Why are you swearing? I trust you.”

“Then just have dinner with us tonight,” Lucy said, slipping into her best pleading tone. “Let’s celebrate you coming home. Okay?”

Lucy was incredibly good at acting cute, and Quinn had always treated her like a little sister. It was hard to refuse her.

And it was only one meal. It shouldn’t matter.

So in the end, Quinn nodded. Not long after, the doorbell rang.

Lucy jumped up immediately. “Quinn, if you don’t feel like dealing with him, you don’t have to. I’m here,

remember?”

With that she ran to the door.

Quinn smiled faintly, warmth spreading through her chest.

“Quinn!”

Lucy’s voice came from the doorway, and Quinn quickly stood up and walked out.

“Look!” Lucy said excitedly. “Julian bought so much fruit!”

She leaned closer and whispered, “They’re all your favorites.”

Quinn’s gaze drifted, almost involuntarily, toward Julian.

The man had already taken off his coat and suit jacket. Underneath he wore a crisp shirt and fitted vest.

He was removing a pair of sapphire cufflinks, setting them casually on the table.

The gemstones clicked softly against the surface.

Quinn worked with clothing and accessories all the time. With one glance she could tell those cufflinks were worth at least tens of thousands of dollars.

And he had just tossed them there without a second thought.

The driver and security guards helped bring the groceries upstairs before leaving again.

A moment later, Julian picked up several boxes of fruit and walked into the kitchen.

Quinn found herself watching him.

With his broad shoulders and narrow waist, he stood with his back to her, calmly placing the fruit into the refrigerator one item at a time.
