Chapter 153 The Word She Chose

Julian lowered his eyes, his gaze settling on the ceramic bowl in front of him.

Quinn kept going, her voice steady even as she chose her words carefully. About the sketchesI told you already, they were for my designs. I won’t deny it, even though Ieven though I don’t like you, Julian, you have a very distinctive look. From a designer’s perspective, that kind of structure is rare, it sparks ideas. Does that make sense?

Julian didn’t respond.

Quinn glanced at him, unable to stop herself.

He wasn’t looking at her at all, his focus drifting somewhere distant, like he wasn’t really in the room

anymore.

His shoulders, usually squared and unshakable, seemed to sink just slightly.

For no clear reason, a word surfaced in Quinn’s mind.

Broken.

The thought felt absurd the moment it appeared. Someone like Julian had nothing to do with that word.

Julian suddenly lifted his gaze and looked straight at her. Why don’t you like me?

There was a faint shimmer in his eyes, subtle but unmistakable, like light catching in glass.

Quinn’s chest tightened.

A sudden, irrational sense of hurt welled up inside her, sharp and uninvited.

She answered, Why does anyone need a reason to dislike someone?

She watched as the hand he had resting on the table slowly curled into a fist. The tension showed for a second, then faded as his grip loosened again.

Like something inside him had just given way, the strain gone all at once. And it snapped.

Julian pushed his chair back abruptly, the legs scraping harshly against the floor. Then he turned and walked out without another word.

The moment he disappeared, Quinn’s vision blurred as tears rushed to her eyes.

Julian pulled the door open, nearly running straight into Lucy.

Lucy had been hovering outside for a while, unsure whether she should go in or give them space.

The sudden movement made her jump. When she saw his expression, her stomach dropped. Julian?

He didn’t even glance at her. He walked past, his stride long and fast, like he needed to get out of there immediately.

Lucy hesitated for half a second, then rushed inside. Quinn!

Quinn quickly wiped her eyes, forcing herself to look normal.

She turned back with a small smile. You’re back? You didn’t eat much earlier, right? Come sit, there’s still plenty.

Lucy immediately noticed her red eyes. What happened? Why did he leave? He didn’t say anything weird to you, did he?

What she didn’t say was that Julian hadn’t just looked upset.

There had been something else, something quieter, heavier.

Like he’d just taken a hit he wasn’t ready for.

Quinn shook her head. No, nothing like that. Don’t worry about it, really. Maybe something came up. Just sit down and eat before it gets cold.

Lucy could tell Quinn wasn’t going to open up, so she didn’t push.

After a few bites, she glanced over. Why aren’t you eating?

Quinn forced a casual tone. I’m good, I already ate.

Lucy looked at the table, then back at her. The food looked barely touched.

You call that eating?Lucy said. Julian made all of this. Who knows when we’ll get another chance like this?

Quinn paused, then slowly picked up her fork again.

Lucy smiled and added some food to her plate. That’s better. Eat more. Don’t waste his cooking.”

Quinn kept eating.

Lucy had said they might not get another chance.

She’s probably right. I might never get to eat something he makes again.

She had told him she didn’t like him. Even an average guy wouldn’t take that well.

Let alone someone like Julian, someone who had always been admired, always the one people gravitated

toward.

Maybe no one had ever turned him down before. Maybe no one had ever said they didn’t like him.

And honestly, a man like him probably didn’t give anyone a reason to.

So what was she supposed to do if she didn’t say it?

Even if she were single, even if her life were uncomplicated, how could she ever match someone like him?

Quinn, you’re still eating?

Lucy had already set her fork down, watching Quinn keep going.

Quinn finally stopped. Okay, I’m done. It’s just really good, I got carried away,”

QuinnLucy leaned in, frowning. Waitare you crying? Hey, don’t cry.”

Quinn sniffed, trying to pull herself together.

She wiped her eyes and forced a smile. I’m fine. It’s justmoving back and living with you again, it feels really nice.”

Lucy hugged her immediately. Right? I knew you’d feel that way. Just don’t disappear on me again, okay? Don’t leave me hanging like that.

Quinn rested her head against Lucy’s shoulder, tears slipping out no matter how hard she tried to stop them.

Okay,she said quietly.

Later that night, Lucy went back to her room and called Julian.

Julian was drinking.

Zeke and Dylan were sitting with him.

Zeke reached over and stopped his hand. That’s enough, man. What’s going on with you? You haven’t said a word and you’re already almost two bottles in. What are you doing, trying to wreck yourself?
