Chapter 154 What He Can’t Fix
Finished
Dylan nodded along. “Seven, whatever it is, we might not be able to fix it, but at least talk it out. Bottling it up isn’t helping.”
Julian didn’t respond. He pulled his hand free and finished another glass in one go.
Zeke grabbed the bottle this time and held onto it. “Fine, if you won’t talk, I’ll take a guess. This is about Quinn, isn’t it?”
Julian stayed silent, but his jaw tightened, the movement in his throat giving him away.
Zeke exhaled. “Yeah, figured. What happened? She’s backing out of the divorce?”
Julian shook his head, then finally spoke. “Give me the bottle.”
“You really think more alcohol is the answer?” Zeke shot back. “Look, I might not be able to help with everything, but when it comes to relationships, I’ve been around the block a few times. Say it out loud, I’ll help you think it through.”
Julian had always been ahead of everyone else from the start.
Some people are born with advantages and still waste them. Some barely manage to hold on to what they have.
But Julian was different.
With his background, his ability, and his instincts, he had never really failed at anything.
Not until Quinn came along. Through her, he found himself feeling things he had never known before, frustration, disappointment, a kind of loneliness that lingered, and the ache of wanting someone who was never really his to have.
Chasing someone had never been something he needed help with. He didn’t need advice, and he definitely didn’t need Zeke coaching him.
He had always believed he could handle anything.
But this was Quinn.
Any kind of pressure, any calculated move, even thinking about it felt wrong, like it would cheapen something he didn’t want to touch that way.
He had always stood tall, untouchable, above everyone else.
Only with her was he willing to bend, to let go of that pride, to put everything he had at her feet.
And it still didn’t matter.
She said she didn’t like him.
He had never realized words could cut this deep.

Hearing it from her felt like something had cut straight through his chest, clean and deep. Even now, the ache was still there, dull but constant, refusing to fade.
Zeke kept the bottle out of reach. “Listen, nothing about relationships is guaranteed. Even if nothing’s started yet, or even if it has, things go sideways all the time. Ask Dylan. He’s engaged, right? Still dealing with stuff.”
Dylan nodded quickly. “Yeah, for sure. No relationship is smooth all the way through. Dating, engaged, married, doesn’t matter, people clash. It’s normal. Even the best couples argue.”
Julian leaned back against the couch, rubbing his temple.
The alcohol was hitting him too fast, but the headache had started long before that.
Ever since he left Quinn.
For the first time, he didn’t know what to do next.
Zeke kept going, trying to get through to him. “If everything in love was easy, it wouldn’t mean anything. It’s like a heartbeat, it needs ups and downs. If it’s flat, that’s game over. Same thing here. You don’t just get the good parts, you get all of it.”
Dylan gave him a thumbs–up. “That actually made sense.”
It all sounded reasonable.
But when it was happening to you, none of that made it hurt any less.
Zeke kept talking. Dylan backing him up, but Julian stayed silent, his face half in shadow, his expression unreadable.
Just then, Dylan’s phone rang.
He picked up, said a few quick words, then looked at Zeke. “Zeke, my fiancée’s coming over.”
Zeke frowned. “We’re in the middle of this, why would she come now? Tell her we’re busy. Julian’s not in the mood for company.”
Dylan glanced at Julian. “She’s not coming alone. She’s bringing a friend.”
“That’s even worse,” Zeke said. “Seriously, read the room. Why bring extra people when he’s clearly not okay?”
Dylan hesitated. “It’s not just anyone. It’s… Clara.”

Zeke paused, then instinctively looked at Julian. “Julian, what do think?”
“Who?” Julian finally spoke, his voice calm but distant.
“Clara,” Zeke said. “Clara Goodwin.”
Julian’s expression didn’t change. “So?”

Zeke sighed. “Were you even listening? She and Dylan’s fiancée are on their way here. You good with that?” Julian glanced at Dylan. “If she’s here for you, handle it.”
Dylan shook his head. “No… she’s not coming for me. She knows I’m with you. She’s coming to see you.”
