Quinn didn’t respond. She simply turned and headed toward Lucy’s bedroom, quiet and composed.
Lucy trailed after her, still mid–complaint. “Quinn, I’m serious, I really don’t want Clara as my sister–in- law. You have no idea how fake she is. Like, the kind of fake that makes your skin crawl. Wait, what are you doing?”
Quinn bent down, picked up a pair of soft house slippers, and placed them neatly in front of her. “Put these on. Yeah, the heating’s on, but it’s not that warm. You’ll end up getting sick walking around barefoot like that.”
Lucy immediately brightened, slipping her feet in before throwing her arms around Quinn. “You’re honestly the best, Quinn. I mean it.”
Quinn let out a small laugh. “Are you hungry? I can make some ravioli.”
“Say less, I’m starving.”
Neither of them could really cook. Their version of “making food” was boiling water and tossing in a bag of frozen ravioli or tortellini, nothing more complicated than that.
They moved around the kitchen together, clumsy but efficient enough, while Lucy kept venting.
“I swear, men are all the same. Completely unreliable. Even Julian, and he’s supposed to be the exception.”
At this point, she had already accepted that Julian and Quinn were never going to happen.
Quinn had drawn a clear line, no ambiguity, no room for interpretation.
Since it was a lost cause, Lucy figured there was no point holding back anymore.
And honestly, she just didn’t like Clara.
“There are tons of families they could align with. Why does it have to be the Goodwins?” Lucy scoffed. “It’s not like she’s the only woman in this city.”
Quinn gave a faint smile as she stirred the pot. “Maybe they’re just the most suitable option. Either way, his. decisions aren’t something you need to worry about.”
“I’m just talking. It’s not like he’d listen to me anyway.” Lucy sighed, then glanced at Quinn with a mix of frustration and regret. “Still… if you were the one marrying into the family, that would’ve been perfect.”
Quinn’s expression shifted, her tone turning firmer. “Lucy, don’t say things like that anymore. There’s nothing between me and him. If someone overhears, it’ll just create unnecessary misunderstandings.”
Lucy immediately nodded. “Okay, okay, I won’t say it again. Don’t be mad. I just think you’re amazing, and I know Julian’s great too. It just feels like you two would make sense together.”
Quinn shook her head, smiling lightly, though there was something distant in it. “That’s not how it works. Me and him… we’re not exactly a match.”

“How are you not?” Lucy started counting on her fingers again. “You’re both smart, capable, good–looking. decent people. That’s already more than most couples.”
Quinn glanced at her. “Then why not add things like family background, money, social standing, education?”
She paused briefly. Truthfully, she didn’t even know Julian’s academic background, only that Lucy had once said he was the kind of person who always came out on top.
Lucy shrugged. “Yeah, those things matter, but they’re not everything. Although, in families like ours, sometimes you don’t really get a say.”
Quinn lowered her gaze slightly. “There’s a reason people care about marrying within the same circle.”
Lucy leaned against the counter, unconvinced. “I don’t buy that completely. Plenty of those so–called perfect matches end up miserable. People stay together for appearances, but behind closed doors, they’re living totally separate lives.”
Quinn let out a quiet breath. “Lucy, everything you’re talking about feels very far removed from my reality. If I hadn’t met you, I would never even cross paths with someone like Julian. People from different worlds don’t just live differently, they think differently. After marriage, that gap doesn’t disappear. It becomes harder.”
Lucy softened a little. “I get what you’re saying, I do. But still, in my opinion, you’re the best. That Clara? She doesn’t even come close to you.”
Quinn didn’t respond to that. She simply scooped the ravioli onto a plate and set it down. “Don’t worry about things that aren’t yours to carry. By the way, Julian left his cufflinks here yesterday. I put them away. If you have time, you can bring them back to him.”
Lucy made a face. “I don’t even feel like seeing him right now. I’ll just text him later and have someone pick them up.”
Quinn glanced at her. “You should just go yourself. They’re expensive. What if they get lost?”
Lucy waved it off. “Please, he wouldn’t care. It’s just a pair of cufflinks.”
Quinn didn’t say anything, just looked at her.
Lucy sighed dramatically. “Fine, fine. I’ll call him. Worst case, I’ll have his driver come get them.”
She pulled out her phone and dialed.
When the call connected, she said, “Hey, your cufflinks are here. Want me to have someone come grab
them?”
There was a brief pause before Julian’s voice came through. “Okay.”
After hanging up, Julian looked at his assistant. “Push the meeting back an hour.”
He grabbed his coat and walked out.
On the way to Lucy’s place, he made a quick call to Veronica.

The alcohol from the night before hadn’t knocked him out, but it left a dull, persistent headache that wouldn’t go away. Combined with everything else on his mind, sleep never really came.
Early that morning, after finishing his workout, Julian reached out to Maddox.
Maddox’s life abroad would have been considered comfortable by most standards.
But for someone like him, who had always lived surrounded by luxury and excess, it felt like being stripped of everything familiar. Not just a downgrade, but a complete reset.
Still, with his family’s orders hanging over him and Julian’s authority, he didn’t dare come back on his
OWN.
So when he saw Julian calling, hope flickered instantly.
“Seven, does this mean you’ve forgiven me? I can come back now?”
