Chapter 156 That Post

Julian,Lucy said, clearly nervous but pushing through it, what happened between you and Quinn? After you left, she started crying.

Julian’s brows pulled tight instantly.

He stood up, already moving toward the door, phone in hand.

Once he was outside, away from the noise, he spoke again. She cried? Why?

I don’t know.Lucy said honestly. Her eyes were already kind of red after you left. Then while we were eating, she justbroke down. I asked her what was wrong, but she wouldn’t tell me anything.

Lucy didn’t understand it.

Julian understood it even less.

She said she didn’t like him and didn’t want him around.

He left. So why was she the one crying?

If anyone should feel like that, shouldn’t it be me?

The thought hit harder than he expected. And still, none of it stopped what came next.

That tight, uncomfortable ache in his chest. She didn’t want him. Might even resent him.

And he still couldn’t help it.

He used to think that saying, about loving someone so much you lose yourself, was exaggerated.

Now it felt painfully real. But what could he do? Nothing,

Every time he got close, she pulled away.

Maybeonce she was free, things would be different. Maybe.

For now,Julian said quietly, just keep an eye on her. If anything’s off, call me right away.”

Lucy hesitated, then forced herself to say it. Julianif you don’t even know why she’s upset, then maybe it has nothing to do with you. You should respect what she wants. Juststop seeing her.”

She hung up immediately after saying it.

Then stood there, hand on her chest, like she had just done something reckless.

Back in the room, Julian pushed the door open.

His expression was worse than before. He sat down without a word and picked up his drink again.

The burn hit his throat, but it didn’t help.

His head throbbed. His chest felt worse.

Julian opened his eyes suddenly, his gaze sharp as it cut across the room. Clara was holding up her phone, taking selfies.

The moment she noticed him looking, she froze and lowered her arm.

Julian didn’t say anything.

He looked away just as quickly, then stood up. I’m heading out.

Zeke got up too. Already? It’s still early. You haven’t even eaten anything, just been drinking all night. That’s not gonna end well.”

Clara seized the moment. A friend of mine just opened a new place downtown. It’s actually really good. Want to check it out?

Julian was already slipping on his coat. You guys go.

He walked out. Clara didn’t follow.

There was something in his expression that made it clear, pushing it would only make things worse.

Zeke left with him.

Once they were gone, Clara turned to Dylan. What’s going on with him?

Dylan smiled, casual on the surface. We’ve been trying to figure that out all night. No luck.”

He could tell exactly where her interest was.

Which was why he wasn’t about to mention Quinn.

Some things you just don’t say.

His fiancée spoke up instead. Do you know someone named Quinn? Is she stillhanging around Julian?

Dylan frowned. Hanging around?

You didn’t hear?Clara said. I heard she caused a scene at a bar and had Julian come handle it for her.

That’s not really what happened,Dylan said, then stopped himself. Look, that’s Seven’s business. We don’t need to get into it.”

He wasn’t going further. Julian’s situation wasn’t simple.

He might choose for himself. Or he might go with what made the most sense for the family.

At the end of the day, alliances meant leverage.

And nobody ignored that.

The night passed, and morning came. Lucy woke up close to ten, stretching lazily.

She hadn’t felt like job hunting lately.

And honestly, with the money Julian sent her, she didn’t have to rush.

She lay in bed, scrolling through her phone, automatically opening her feed.

Then one post made her sit straight up.

Finished

She jumped out of bed, didn’t even bother with shoes, and ran out, spotting Quinn in the living room.

Quinn!

She rushed over, holding up her phone. That’s Julian, right? Tell me that’s him. It is, isn’t it?

Quinn looked at the screen.

Two girls pressed close together in the foreground, smiling for the camera. Behind them, the lighting was low, but you could make out a couch.

And on it, a man.

Most of him was in shadow, but his build, those long legs, the outline alone was unmistakable.

It was Julian.

Even blurred by dim light, his features stood out in a way that made him impossible to mistake. That’s him,Lucy said, already annoyed. Why is he at a lounge with Clara? I seriously cannot stand her.She tapped the screen and pulled up the caption.

Then read it out loud, her tone rising. Such a perfect night. Seriously? What is that supposed to mean? That’s exactly how people start rumors, you know that?
