Chapter 168 No Way Back
“He probably does,” Quinn said. “With his personality, he wouldn’t go out with her if he didn’t.”
“True.” Lucy said with a sigh. “Nobody can force Julian to do anything.”
She groaned. “If he really likes her, I’m doomed. I seriously can’t stand her.”
Quinn laughed softly and nudged her toward the door. “It’s late. Go shower and get some sleep.”
Lucy walked to the door, then turned back. “Quinn, just wait, okay? Once your divorce is done, I’m introducing you to someone way better.”
Quinn waved her off. “Go already.”
After Lucy left, the room went quiet again.
Quinn stood there for a moment, her thoughts drifting, before finally moving toward the bed.
Her phone buzzed.
She glanced down.
Julian.
Julian sent a message, “If you run into any issues with the design, you can reach out anytime.”
Quinn replied, “Okay.”
Julian looked at the screen, unsurprised.
That was always how she was.
So this is it… finish the job and walk away.
She had said she wouldn’t avoid him. But she had already planned her distance.
Julian typed, “Some details are easier to go over in person. I have high standards when it comes to clothing, so I’d appreciate your cooperation.”
He read it over once, making sure it sounded neutral enough.
He rarely messaged people like this. Most of the time, he didn’t have the patience for it.

But ever since Quinn appeared, he found himself opening their chat without a reason, even checking her profile now and then, only to find nothing there at all, no posts, no updates, nothing that gave him any sense of her life, and her replies were no different, always brief, always distant, as if she had already decided exactly how much space to keep between them.
He used to think people who spent hours texting were wasting time.
Now he finally understood it. The problem was, Quinn never gave him the chance.

People really do want more once they get closer. Before this, keeping his distance had felt manageable.
Not ideal, but acceptable.
But now that he had stepped closer, there was no going back.
Especially after he understood what her relationship with Chase really was.
After he realized how she truly felt.
The feelings he had kept buried were no longer something he could control.
He wanted to close the distance between them, not just a little, but in a way that made this space feel meaningless.
And with every step he took toward her, the feeling only grew stronger, sharper, harder to ignore.
It wasn’t enough.
Somewhere along the way, even he had become the kind of person who kept wanting more, no matter how much he already had.
The message was sent.
Minutes passed, stretching longer than they should have.
Still nothing.
Julian glanced at his phone again, his fingers tightening slightly around it as something unfamiliar settled in his chest.
Is she ignoring me, or just busy?
Do I wait, or say something else?
For someone who usually made decisions instantly, this felt almost ridiculous.
Then finally, his phone lit up.
Quinn replied, “Would a call work? We don’t necessarily have to meet.”
Just like he expected. Avoidance.
Julian replied, “Don’t you want to make something I’ll actually be happy with?”
That left her no easy way out.
A moment later, her reply came.
“…Okay.”
She didn’t have a choice. She would just finish everything as quickly as possible.

Once the outfit was done, there would be no reason to see him again.
Julian continued, “Before you start, shouldn’t you get a sense of my preferences?”
Quinn replied, “Do you have any specific preferences? Colors, patterns, fabrics?”
Julian replied, “Not really. I trust your judgment.”
Quinn let out a quiet breath.
“That helps,” she replied. “If I go with a tailored modern style, I’ll put together a few options for closures and detailing. You can choose what you like.”
Julian replied. “For details like that, it’s better to go over them in person.”
Quinn paused, then replied, “Then I’ll reach out once the designs are ready.”
Julian typed again, “If it works for you, you could use my office while you’re designing. I can set up a workspace so we can communicate more easily.”
Quinn replied almost instantly, “That won’t be convenient. I prefer working from home.”
Julian looked at the screen, a flicker of disappointment crossing his expression.
If she had agreed, he would have been able to see her whenever he wanted.
Still, this wasn’t nothing. At least now, they had a reason to stay in contact.
That was enough for now. And as long as there was a beginning, things could change.
As for her saying she didn’t like him. That didn’t mean she never would.
He just needed time.
Because when someone truly likes another person, they don’t just think about the present.
They start imagining a future.
