Chapter 169 The Chase
What Julian had in mind was never something temporary,
He was thinking about a lifetime.
Firdshed
Growing up side by side, building a life together, watching the years pass until they were old and gray.
In his world, there was no second option. It was always going to be her.
When Quinn said she didn’t like him, he figured it had more to do with distance than anything else. They hadn’t spent enough time together, hadn’t really gotten to know each other in any meaningful way.
And now, she had rejected his suggestion outright.
Julian replied, “Then we can go over it once your design’s finished.”
Quinn stared at the message, completely thrown off.
The reason she had taken so long to respond earlier was simple. She wanted to say no, she just didn’t know how to phrase it without making things worse.
So what exactly was Julian trying to do?
She had already said she didn’t like him. That wasn’t vague or open to interpretation. Why did he act like it didn’t land at all?
Then a thought slowly settled in.
Maybe men, no matter who they were, had a tendency to push their luck.
Even someone like Julian wasn’t an exception.
If anything, a man like him was probably used to getting his way. The more resistance he met, the more it sparked his interest.
He probably had never met a woman who turned him down so directly.
Or told him she didn’t like him to his face.
What she thought was a firm rejection might have only made things more interesting to him.
Maybe what he enjoyed wasn’t the outcome, but the pursuit itself.
The more she pulled away, the more invested he became.
Quinn let out a quiet breath, feeling a headache coming on.
If she had to trace it back, everything started with those two moments that crossed a line.
That was probably when he began to notice her differently.

As for what he said about firsts, first kiss, all of that…
Now, she didn’t believe a word of it.
This has to be another move. He saw I didn’t respond the way he expected, so now he’s switching tactics.
Using the clothing design as an excuse to see her again.
It reminded her of Harold.
Finished
He kept setting up meetings under the pretense of jewelry design, when in reality, he wanted people to talk, to assume there was something going on between them.
So what was Julian after?
That question only made Quinn more determined to finish the design as quickly as possible and close this chapter.
She set her phone aside, pulled out her sketches, and leaned over her desk, picking up the thread of her earlier ideas.
Julian might have unsettled her, but once she locked into work mode, everything else faded.
Her focus became sharp, precise, almost untouchable. By the time she finalized the design, the night had already gotten late.
She rubbed her eyes, reached for her phone, and noticed several messages from Julian.
A lot of time had passed. When she didn’t reply, he didn’t push further.
Quinn sorted through her sketches, took clear photos, and sent them over.
In her mind, someone like Julian had to be busy. Maybe not overwhelmed every second, but definitely not the type to hover over his phone.
And yet every time she texted him, he responded almost immediately.
Like he had been waiting.
This time was no different.
Julian replied, “Want to go over it in person?”
Quinn stared at the screen for a second.
She knew if this didn’t get resolved properly, he wouldn’t just let it go.
Quinn replied, “Sure. I’ll pick the time and place.”
This time, she was careful.
No places that could be misinterpreted, no setting that could invite gossip.

And she had already decided she wouldn’t go alone.
She was bringing Lucy. With a third person there, things would stay neutral no matter what.
And she wouldn’t feel so on edge around him.
Finished
Julian didn’t object to her making the plans. What he didn’t expect was that she would actually follow through on bringing someone else.
Convincing Lucy hadn’t been easy.
Lucy had zero interest in going.
“I swear, I act more careful around him than I do around my own family,” Lucy complained. “One tiny thing and he’s already calling me out.”
She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Last time I kissed you on the cheek, he went on and on about it.”
Lucy had no idea that Julian wasn’t correcting her behavior.
He just didn’t like seeing her that close to Quinn. He hadn’t even had that kind of closeness himself.
Lucy thought he was being strict. In reality, it was personal.
So naturally, she wanted nothing to do with him.
But since Quinn asked, she showed up anyway, even if it meant forcing herself.
When they arrived, they spotted Julian immediately. It wasn’t just because he was looking for them.
He was the kind of man you noticed the second you walked into a room.
The temperature inside was warm, so he had taken off his jacket, leaving just a dress shirt and vest. Plenty of men dressed like that in a place like this.
But nothing about his look blended in.
The tailoring, the fabric, the fit, everything about it was clearly custom. And more than that, it was the way he carried himself.
Even dressed down, there was no hiding the quiet authority in his presence.
Lucy leaned in close to Quinn and whispered, “Okay, I’ll admit it. He scares me, but he’s ridiculously good- looking. Like, no bad angle kind of good–looking. If he were just a little softer, he’d be perfect.”
Quinn didn’t respond right away.
Because in her experience, being gentle didn’t necessarily mean being good.
