Chapter 179 Not Getting In
If she had known Julian was the one taking Lucy home, she would not have bothered coming at all.
And there was no chance she was getting into his car again.
Quinn turned to Zeke. “Are you guys heading out to take Lucy back now?”
Finished
Zeke shook his head casually. “No rush, I’m staying a bit longer. Just let Seven drive you both, it’s on the way anyway.”
Quinn didn’t argue. She carefully helped Lucy into the back seat, making sure her head didn’t bump the doorframe.
After settling her in, Quinn closed the door and stepped back. “Then I’ll just head out.”
Zeke paused, confused. “Wait, you’re not getting in too?”
Quinn kept walking, not even turning around. “I’ll call a ride, it’s fine.”
She had just reached the curb when she suddenly felt someone step in close behind her, the air shifting in a way that made her instinctively tense.
Before she could react, her arm was caught.
Quinn twisted sharply, ready to pull free, but stopped when she saw Julian.
He must have gotten out of the car without her noticing. His hand was firm around her arm, not rough, but strong enough that she couldn’t slip away.
Quinn looked straight at him, her voice cool and controlled. “What are you doing, Julian?”
“Get in the car.”
His tone was low, steady, giving nothing away.
Quinn’s expression hardened. “I already said I’m not getting in.” \
Julian didn’t budge. “Get in.”
That was enough.
Quinn’s patience snapped. “Are you serious right now? I said no!”
Zeke stood off to the side, genuinely surprised.
He had never seen anyone push back on Julian like that.
He stepped in quickly, trying to smooth things over. “Hey, hey, let go of her first.”
Julian glanced at him, but didn’t respond, his grip still there.

Zeke sighed and turned to Quinn. “Sorry about this, he’s had a few drinks, probably not thinking straight. Don’t take it to heart. Why don’t you just ride with him and call it a night?”
Quinn suddenly pulled hard, trying to break free.
Julian hesitated for half a second, then let go.
He didn’t want to hurt her.
The moment she was free, Quinn turned and walked off fast, almost breaking into a run.
Julian moved to follow, but Zeke grabbed him. “You’ve had enough tonight, and you know it. You’re not exactly in a state to talk things out, so chasing her right now is not going to help.”
Quinn made it down the block and flagged a rideshare.
Once she got in, she realized her heart was still racing, her chest tight.
What exactly is Julian trying to do?
Did he really think she was someone he could just pick up and put down whenever he felt like it?
He was about to get engaged, already had a fiancée lined up, and yet he still acted like this with her.
It would have been laughable if it didn’t hurt so much.
Except she couldn’t laugh.
There was a dull, constant ache spreading through her chest, like something was being slowly torn apart.
Why did everything in her life have to feel like this?
Rosalie came back into their lives and naturally became the center of everything. Then again, maybe “came back” was the wrong way to think about it.
Those had always been Rosalie’s parents. Loving her was only natural.
Quinn never expected much. She had never asked for everything.
Just a little bit of care would have been enough. But even that was never hers.
She kept telling herself that once the divorce went through, she could finally start over.
Except now, even that felt out of reach. And then there was Julian.
She knew exactly what kind of man he was. Confident, capable, the kind of man people noticed without
trying.
The kind of man it was easy to fall for. But she also knew just as clearly that there was no future for them.
She knew what she wanted, and Julian was not someone who could give her that.
And what he wanted from her… That part was even clearer.

Something temporary, something easy, something with no strings attached.
Maybe not even a real relationship. Maybe just something kept out of sight.
Or worse, something purely physical.
And when it was over, he could wrap it up with a gift, something expensive and impersonal, and walk away like it had never meant anything.
She had always known it would never work. So why did it still hurt this much?
Why even after knowing about the engagement, even after understanding exactly how he saw her, did it still get to her like this?
All the resistance she had put up, all the rejection, all the unease…
Now it all felt pointless.
Because deep down, she couldn’t deny it anymore. She had fallen for him.
And that made everything worse. That was why she had said she couldn’t stand him before.
She thought if she pushed him away hard enough, if she hurt his pride, he would disappear.
But instead, he came back.
Like he needed her to see it clearly, to feel it fully, before he would let it go.
Tears slipped down her face before she even noticed.
Her phone rang, pulling her back.
Lucy.
Lucy was slumped in the back seat, barely aware of what was going on. When the car stopped at a red light, the sudden brake made her tip forward.
Julian reached out immediately, catching her by the shoulder and pulling her back.
That small jolt cleared her head a little.
She blinked, squinting at him. “Julian… why are you in my dream too? That’s kind of terrifying…”
She was still half out of it.
Then her hand brushed the cold window, and the chill grounded her a bit more.
