“Is that right?” Julian adjusted the blanket over her, then sat down at the edge of the bed, leaning in just enough to close the distance. “Then I should feel pretty honored.”

He was close enough that she could feel the warmth of his breath.

Quinn’s chest tightened, her heartbeat climbing fast. She didn’t even dare breathe normally.

“If you like what you see,” he continued, his voice low and steady, “then get the divorce over with. After that…”

“No.” Quinn cut in immediately, panic rising. “Even if I get divorced, it won’t be you and me.”

Julian looked at her, his gaze steady. “Why not? Didn’t you just say I check all your boxes?”

“I was joking.” Quinn said quickly, already struggling to hold her own argument together. “I don’t like you. That’s the point.”

“You just said you did.”

“I said I like your face.”

“Then I guess I should be grateful I was born with it.”

“Julian!” Quinn raised her voice, frustration spilling over. “Where is your pride? Your self–respect? I said I don’t like you. Why can’t you just accept that? Can you have a little dignity?”

The room fell silent.

The only sound left was the steady rhythm of the monitor nearby.

The second the words left her mouth, Quinn regretted them.

That’s too harsh. Way too harsh.

Someone like Julian had probably never been spoken to like that before.

she had done it more than once.

“Yeah,” Julian said after a few seconds, his voice calm. “I don’t have any.”

He leaned closer, his gaze fixed on her. “Ever since I met you, I stopped having any. So tell me, Quinn, shouldn’t you take responsibility for that?”

Her heart was completely out of control now.

She had never realized how much weight a single sentence could carry. She didn’t want to fall for him. Didn’t want to lose control.
