Chapter 195 No More Pretending

“Playing you?” Julian let out a short, humorless breath, his voice tightening. “You really think that’s what
this is?”
He stepped closer, his tone dropping, controlled but edged with something darker.
“Quinn, you have no idea,” he said quietly, “I’m not the kind of man you think I am.”
Standing that close, she could feel it, the tension in him, the restraint stretched thin.
“There are things I want,” he continued, his eyes locked on hers, “things you wouldn’t want to hear out loud.”
Loving her, wanting to be near her, those were the easy parts.
What he didn’t say was everything else, the part of him that wanted to break through her defenses, to make her stop looking at him like he was someone distant, someone she could push away with a few cold words.
His fingers traced along her chin, slow and deliberate, like he had all the time in the world.
Her skin was soft and warm beneath his touch.
His fingertips, slightly rough, made the contrast stand out even more, sending a faint, unmistakable sensation through her.
Quinn felt a small shiver run through her.
And just like that, her heartbeat slipped out of rhythm.
Julian didn’t stop.
He leaned in, unhurried, closing the space between them bit by bit.
Closer.
She couldn’t hold his gaze anymore. The second she closed her eyes, she felt his breath against her skin.
And then his lips met hers.
This time, there was no confusion, no blurred awareness, no excuse to deny it later.
They were both fully conscious.
Fully aware. Her entire body tensed.
She turned her face away, her voice unsteady. “Don’t… don’t do this.”
Julian’s fingers slid lightly along the bridge of her nose, almost teasing. “You’ve got a lot of nerve, you know that?”

“Julian,” she said, forcing herself to speak, even though it felt like her chest was tightening, “you can say whatever you want. You have money, power, you can do whatever you feel like. I don’t get a say in that.”
“I don’t believe you,” Julian said flatly. “Not a single word.”
He held her gaze.
“Tell me who he is,” he said. “The guy you like. If he’s real, then once you’re divorced, I’ll make sure you end up with him myself.”
There was a sharpness in his voice now, something dangerously close to losing control.
Quinn felt it.
And she knew she had already gone too far to take anything back.
Once you start lying, you have to keep going.
“It wouldn’t work,” she said, forcing the words out. “He’s older than me. He’s already married, has kids, and he doesn’t even live here. I just… like him. That’s it. I never expected anything.”
Julian watched her, searching her face, trying to decide if any of it was real.
He couldn’t tell. But the disappointment hit anyway.
So did the anger.
“Quinn,” he said quietly, “you’d better not be lying to me.”
“I told you,” she said, her voice tightening, “I’m just a regular person. I can’t fight someone like you. If you decide to do something, I can’t stop you. But who I like? That’s mine. That doesn’t change.”
For a second, Julian almost wished he wasn’t the man he’d always been.
He could push it further.
Close the distance all at once, take what he wanted, and ignore whatever she might feel about it.
For him, it wouldn’t be difficult.
But he didn’t.
And he wouldn’t.
“What you want from me is just physical, isn’t it,” Quinn said, her lashes trembling. “If you can just let this go… once I’m out of here, I’ll… I’ll let you decide.”
Julian let out a quiet laugh, but there was nothing amused about it. “Let me decide.”
He straightened, stepping back from the bed. “Quinn, congratulations. You win.”
The warmth around him disappeared with him. Then came the sound of his footsteps, steady, fading.

Her eyes stung before she could stop it. Tears slipped down into the pillow.
“Why are you crying?”
His voice came from right beside her.
Quinn startled, opening her eyes. Julian was back. Standing there like he had never left.
Her eyes were still wet, wide, caught completely off guard.
Funshed
“I’m the one who got rejected,” he said. “I’m the one you questioned. So why are you the one crying?”
“I’m sorry…” Her voice broke. “I’m really sorry.”
It was all she had.
“Just woke up?” another voice cut in. “How are you feeling?”
Quinn turned quickly. A doctor was walking in.
Only then did she realize Julian hadn’t been leaving. He had gone to get help.
After a quick checkup and a few instructions, the doctor left.
The room fell quiet again.
Quinn looked at him. “You’re still here?”
Julian dipped a cotton swab in water and gently brushed it over her lips. He didn’t answer.
“Julian…” she pressed.
“Too dry,” he said casually. “Didn’t feel great.”
Her face flushed instantly. “Julian!”
He finally looked at her. “Didn’t you say I could do whatever I want? I’m just keeping things fair.”
Her heart skipped. “What do you mean?”
“Whatever you did to me,” he said calmly, “I’ll return it.”
Her thoughts spiraled before she could stop them.
The yacht.
The way her hands had landed on his abs.
And what almost happened in the car last night.
Heat rushed straight to her face.
“You’re serious?”

“Kissing. Hugging. Hands wandering,” Julian said, his tone steady. “Once you’re better, we’ll take it step by step.”
At this point, if this was what it took to make him stop, she didn’t see another option.
