Quinn closed her eyes and told herself that even if she could not actually fall asleep, she could at least pretend long enough for Julian to leave.

That was the plan she clung to, but her body clearly had other priorities, because not long after she shut her eyes, she slipped into a real, heavy sleep without even realizing it.

Surgery, no matter how routine, still took something out of you, and even if the incision was small, her body had gone through more than it could just shake off in a few hours.

Julian only set his phone aside once her breathing evened out into a slow, steady rhythm, and when he finally looked at her without distraction, the faint pallor on her face made his expression tighten almost imperceptibly.

She still could not eat, and that alone bothered him more than he expected, because he was already thinking ahead to how he was going to fix that once she recovered, what she should eat, how to build her strength back properly.

He had already arranged for ingredients to be prepared and sent over to Lucy’s place, and once Quinn was discharged, he planned to go there himself and take care of her meals.

The thought settled naturally in his mind, as if it had always belonged there.

Then his attention shifted back to something less simple.

The divorce.

A few minutes earlier, while she was asleep, he had already reached out to Maddox.

Maddox had returned quietly, had dinner with his family, and was now staying in a villa outside the city under arrangements that made sure he kept a low profile.

Julian had made sure he was comfortable, though. Anything Maddox wanted was taken care of without question.

After a brief exchange, Maddox understood exactly what needed to happen and made the call himself.

Chase, on the other end, had already been restless for hours.

Rosalie was overseas, and there was no real way for him to confirm anything about her life, especially something as personal as whether she was seeing someone.

If she chose not to admit it, he would never know.

And that uncertainty was eating at him.

Someone like Rosalie would never lack attention, and it was impossible to believe she had no one pursuing her, which meant that if the right person came along, there was no reason for her not to move on.

The more he thought about it, the more it bothered him.

His phone rang, and even though the number was unfamiliar, something about it made him answer immediately.

Maddox said, “It’s Maddox.”

Chase straightened instinctively. “Mr. Dixon? You’re back already?”

Maddox did not entertain small talk. “What’s going on with your wife?”

Chase let out a frustrated breath. “Don’t even start. I know nothing happened between you two, but she still wants a divorce because of it.”

“Then give her one,” Maddox said, as if there were no other reasonable option.

Chase hesitated, and when he spoke again, his tone carried a trace of defensiveness. “My dad thinks it might hurt the company.”

“I’ll be clear with you,” Maddox said, his voice turning colder. “Someone with real influence is interested in Quinn, and if you keep dragging this out, you won’t just be dealing with reputation issues, you might not have a company left to protect.”

Chase went silent for a moment before asking, “What exactly are you saying?”

“I’m saying I wouldn’t cross that person,” Maddox replied. “And you definitely can’t afford to, so stop overthinking it and finalize the divorce.”

But Chase’s mind had already gone somewhere else. “So what, she’s seeing someone behind my back now?”

Maddox actually laughed this time, short and humorless. “You didn’t ask that question when you sent her

room.”

Chase had no answer.

Maddox continued, his patience clearly gone. “Forget your ego and handle what matters. Get the divorce done.”

“And if I don’t?”

Now the anger was rising fast.

Quinn had once claimed she loved him, and now she wanted out and might even be involved with someone else.

That was not something he could just accept.

Then the line went dead.

Chase stared at his phone, unable to piece it together. How is she even connected to someone like that?

The only way to find out was to ask her directly.

He immediately switched to another number and called her.

The phone began to ring softly on the bedside table.

Julian noticed it first, picked it up without hesitation, and declined the call before it could wake her.

Sometime after two in the morning, Quinn stirred, her brows knitting slightly as the dull ache from her incision pulled her out of deeper sleep.

When she opened her eyes, the room was dim, washed in the warm glow of a bedside lamp, and Julian was still there, sitting quietly beside her as if he had never moved.

She had no idea how long she had been asleep, but it had clearly been hours.

And yet he had not left.

He was still here.

Still watching over her.

Something in her chest tightened, and for a brief moment, a thought surfaced that she had been trying to suppress for far too long.

What if I just stop thinking about everything that’s supposed to matter? What if none of it, the differences, the expectations, the consequences, what if none of it matters for once? If I can just be with him, even for a little while, maybe that’s enough to carry with me for the rest of my life.

Julian had just finished going through a document and glanced up out of habit, only to find her already looking at him.

“You’re awake?” he said, a hint of surprise in his voice. “Are you uncomfortable?”

Quinn shook her head.

Julian’s expression softened slightly as he studied her. “You’ve been up and didn’t say anything, just lying there watching me?”
