Julian didn’t even consider it.

He had finally gotten a chance to be alone with Quinn, there was no way he was leaving now.

He gave Lucy a look that said everything without needing words.

In front of Quinn, he didn’t call her out, but it was clear enough.

Lucy got the message immediately.

She wasn’t about to push it any further.

At least she had seen Quinn and knew she was okay, that was enough.

She turned to Quinn. “Alright, I’ll head out. Call me if you need anything.”

Quinn wanted her to stay, but with Julian standing right there, she couldn’t say it.

“I’m here,” Julian added calmly. “She’ll be fine.”

Lucy left.

Quinn’s eyes lingered on the door for a moment even after it closed.

Julian reached out a hand toward her. “Want to get up and walk a bit?”

Quinn hesitated, not because she didn’t want to follow the doctor’s instructions, but because she knew what that would mean.

If she got up, he would stay close, maybe hold her, steady her, and there would be no avoiding physical

contact.

She already felt uncomfortable enough.

Even though she had been cleaned up a little, she hadn’t showered, hadn’t washed her hair, and after surgery, she still didn’t feel like herself.

Standing next to Julian, who looked completely polished and put together, only made that contrast sharper.

“Does it hurt?” Julian asked, leaning closer, his hands braced against the bed as he looked at her.

“Then what’s the problem?” he said gently. “Come on.”

She hesitated, then added, “Just… don’t stand so close.”

Julian frowned slightly. “You said you wouldn’t avoid me anymore.”

“I’m not avoiding you,” she said quickly. “I really can do it on my own.”

I can’t exactly tell you I’m worried you’ll notice I don’t feel clean right now.

Julian studied her for a second, then finally stepped back a couple of feet.

Quinn slowly moved her legs off the bed. The hospital gown hung loosely on her, making her look even smaller, almost swallowed by the fabric.

The moment her feet touched the floor, Julian crouched down in front of her.

She startled. “I can do it myself,”

He didn’t argue.

He simply picked up her shoes and helped her put them on, his movements steady and careful, then stood and took hold of her arm. “Easy.”

Something in Quinn’s chest softened instantly. Again and again, he kept breaking through her defenses without saying much at all.

He actually bent down to put her shoes on.

Her eyes stung, and her vision blurred slightly.

“Quinn?” Julian noticed she hadn’t moved.

She sniffed lightly and forced a small smile. “I’m okay.”

She stepped down fully and stood, the discomfort still there but manageable.

“I can walk on my own,” she said.

Julian let go, but stayed right beside her, his gaze following her every step.

He lowered her gently onto the mattress, their faces briefly close enough that Quinn held her breath without realizing it.

But Julian’s focus never wavered.

As soon as she was settled, he pressed the call button.

“I’m okay,” Quinn said after catching her breath. “I probably just moved wrong.”

“Let the doctor check,” Julian said firmly.

Then he reached for her hand, his fingers closing around hers.

“Your hands are cold,” he said quietly. “Are your feet cold too?”

“I’m fine,” Quinn said quickly. “They’re not.”

Julian didn’t believe her.

He walked to the foot of the bed and reached out, placing his hand against her foot to check for himself.
