Chapter 207 No Loose Ends

Lately, Rosalie had noticed that she and Julian had been talking a lot more than before, not just in how often they texted, but in how long their conversations lasted, with a rhythm that felt noticeably more consistent compared to earlier when it was obvious he was busy and only replied when he had time.

Over the past couple of days, both the frequency and the length of their conversations had increased, and that change didn’t go unnoticed by her.

What pleased her the most was that Julian never acted like other men, he didn’t jump in asking for calls or video chats right away, and he never pushed things in that direction at all.

Rosalie had posted photos on her social media before, most of them angled shots rather than straighton pictures.

She had always been confident in her looks, and even though she knew she wasn’t on Quinn’s level, she also knew she was still more attractive than most women.

Even so, Julian had never once brought up her appearance.

She had hinted at it before, subtly bringing the topic up.

His answer had been simple, what he appreciated most in a woman was her personality and her composure, while everything else came second.

Because of that, Rosalie became even more intentional about how she presented herself online.

As she thought about going back and meeting him in person, and at the same time considered the possibility that Chase might cause trouble, she found it impossible to fully relax.

She decided that before returning, she had to deal with Chase first.

To her, what she had with Julian was already settled.

Once she got back, the relationship would naturally be confirmed.

Before that, she needed to make sure nothing went wrong.

After thinking it through carefully, she finally called Chase.

Chase, on the other hand, had been in a terrible mood, sitting alone at a bar with a drink he barely tasted, his thoughts circling back to Quinn in a way that irritated him more the longer it lasted. He hadn’t expected her to change like this, or maybe it wasn’t her changing at all, but the situation shifting in a way he hadn’t prepared for.

She had always been someone he overlooked, someone he never really valued.

But now, the idea that she might belong to someone else left a bitter feeling in his chest.

It didn’t make sense, and that made it worse.

When his phone lit up and he saw Rosalie’s name, his mood flipped instantly. He straightened without

realizing it and answered right away, his voice bright with surprise.

Chase said, Rosalie, you’re calling me? That’s new.

Rosalie didn’t bother with small talk. “Yeah, I needed to talk to you about something.

Chase leaned forward slightly, suddenly attentive. “Go ahead, I’m listening.”

Rosalie let her tone soften just enough. Chase, we’ve known each other for a long time now, haven’t we, almost ten years?

He smiled faintly, caught off guard by the direction. “Yeah, since we were kids. You still remember that?

Of course I do,she said, her voice carrying a quiet warmth. That’s why I’ve always seen you as someone close, like family. And because of that, there’s something I feel like I should be honest with you about.

Chase’s expression shifted, his back straightening as a sense of importance settled in.

She chose to tell me first. That has to mean something.

What is it?he asked.

Rosalie didn’t hesitate this time. I’m seeing someone.”

The silence on the other end stretched just long enough to turn heavy.

Then it snapped.

Chase said, You told me you weren’t seeing anyone. Why would you lie to me?

Rosalie let out a quiet breath, her tone softening again, carefully measured. Because I didn’t want to hurt you. I didn’t want to see you upset. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I couldn’t keep it from you. Even now, you still matter to me. That hasn’t changed. You understand that, right?

Chase let out a short, frustrated laugh, the kind that didn’t carry any humor. How am I supposed to understand that? You’re with someone else, and you’re saying I still matter?

You know how you feel about me,Rosalie said, her voice gentle but firm. And I’ve thought about it too. I really have. But we’re not right for each other.

Chase’s grip tightened around his glass. Why not?

Rosalie answered without hesitation this time, her reasoning already prepared. At first, it was because Quinn liked you. I couldn’t do that to her. Then you two got married, and that made things even more complicated. I’m her sister. There are boundaries you don’t cross. Maybe in another life, things would’ve been different.

Chase shook his head, his frustration rising. I don’t care about another life. I’m talking about now.”

Rosalie felt the conversation slipping out of her usual control, and for a moment, her patience thinned.

She exhaled quietly, adjusting her tone again. Chase, when you react like this, it puts me in a really difficult position. Do you really want that?

Chase ran a hand through his hair, agitation clear in every movement. You think I’m not in a difficult position? Who is he? What does he have that I don’t?

That was the moment something in Rosalie shifted.

She had always been the one being pursued, the one being accommodated.

She wasn’t used to doing this.

And she didn’t like it.

Her tone sharpened, losing its softness. “Chase, what exactly are you expecting from me right now? I told you I’m in a relationship. Are you trying to argue me out of it, or what?

The change in her tone hit him immediately.

His voice dropped. Rosalie, don’t say it like that. I justI don’t even understand why I feel like this.

He tipped his head back and finished his drink in one go.

By now, everything about Quinn and everything about Rosalie had blurred together in his mind, to the point where he couldn’t even tell what exactly was making him feel this way anymore, only that something inside him felt cracked, like a piece of it had come loose and wouldn’t settle back into place.

Ever since he was a kid, whenever he couldn’t make a decision or didn’t know what to do, Charles had always been there to step in, to clean things up, to point him in the right direction without fail.

But when it came to relationships, there was no one to guide him, and for the first time, he had no idea what he was supposed to do.
