Chapter 209 Too Late to Matter

Firushed

Quinn no longer expected anything from the Lane family, not their approval, not their concern, not even the smallest gesture of care, because whatever they were trying to offer now had come far too late, and somewhere along the way, she had already stopped needing it.

Lucy sat on the couch beside her bed, lazily biting into an apple as she watched Quinn, then suddenly narrowed her eyes like she had just thought of something dramatic. Okay, random thought, but tell me I’m wrong. They’re not waiting for your divorce to go through so they can set you up with some rich, older guy, right? Like one of those creepy business dudes with money but zero personality?

Quinn almost laughed at how specific that sounded, then shook her head. No, they wouldn’t do that. If nothing else, they care too much about how things look on the outside, and honestly, in their eyes, someone like Chase is already hard to beat.”

Lucy nodded slowly, still chewing. Yeah, I guess that’s true. Then what is it? Don’t tell me they suddenly grew a conscience and decided to treat you better.

Quinn smiled, but there was no real warmth in it. It’s not that dramatic.

Lucy rolled her eyes. It kind of is. If someone spends their whole life teaching but can’t even get basic decency right, that’s a problem.

Quinn let out a soft breath, her tone gentle but firm. Hey, don’t get worked up over them. Whatever they do has nothing to do with me anymore.

Lucy nodded quickly, as if sealing that statement. Exactly. Forget them. Solast night. Julian didn’t try anything, right?

That question hit instantly.

Quinn’s face flushed before she could stop it, heat spreading from her cheeks all the

way to her ears.

Images she didn’t want to revisit flickered through her mind.

Seeing that reaction, Lucy’s eyes lit up. Wait, hold on, don’t tell me something actually happened. Did you guys kiss, or

Quinn turned her head away quickly, her voice coming out faster than she intended. What are you even talking about? Nothing happened.

That part, at least, was technically true.

Later that evening, Julian showed up again, this time carrying dinner.

It wasn’t takeout in the usual sense. Everything had clearly been prepared with intention, light, balanced. the kind of meal someone would plan carefully for a patient recovering from surgery.

The moment he stepped in, he thanked the caregiver and told her she could head out for the night, as if taking over was the most natural thing in the world.

Quinn had washed up earlier that day, even managed to wash her hair with some effort, and although the

incision still hurt, she felt noticeably better than before.

From where she sat, she watched Julian move around the small table, sleeves slightly pushed back, long fingers working with quiet efficiency as he unpacked each container and arranged everything neatly.

For a brief moment, something about the scene pulled at her in a way she didn’t expect.

It feltfamiliar.

Not in the sense that it had happened before, but in the sense that it could have.

Like this was what it might look like if two people had been together long enough that taking care of each other had become second nature.

The thought made her cheeks warm before she could stop it..

Julian looked up at that exact moment and caught the faint flush on her face, but completely misunderstood it.

You hungry?he asked casually, gesturing toward the food. Try a little of everything, but don’t overdo it.

Quinn snapped out of it and looked at the table, then immediately shook her head. This is way too much. There’s no way I can eat all of this.

Julian placed the utensils in her hand like it was already decided. That’s fine. I’ll help.

She looked up at him, surprised. You haven’t eaten yet?

I came straight here after work,Julian said. Picked this up on the way. Didn’t stop to eat. Besides, I’d rather eat with you.

Quinn had always assumed he was the kind of man who kept everything controlled and distant, the type who wouldn’t bother with small talk, let alone anything that sounded remotely like flirting.

But lately, he kept saying things that felt just a little too intentional.

And the worst part was, he didn’t seem to realize it at all.

That made it harder to guard against.

Just that one sentence was enough to throw her completely off balance.

Julian noticed she hadn’t moved yet, so he picked up his fork and started placing food into her bowl without hesitation. Go ahead, try it. Tell me if you like it.

Then, almost as an afterthought, he added, I was going to cook for you myself, but today got busy.

Quinn immediately shook her head. No, this is already more than enough. Thank you.

Julian glanced at her. You don’t have to thank me.

Just remember it.

Quinn blinked, confused. Remember what?

Julian gave a faint smile, adding another piece of food to her bowl. That I did something for you. I’ll collect later.

Quinn paused midbite. Collect?

I’m not doing all this for free,he said lightly. Don’t worry, I’m not asking for anything unreasonable.

Quinn swallowed, buying herself a second. “It tastes really good.

If you like it, I’ll have the chef do it again,” Julian said. “Next time I’ll make it myself. After that, we’ll

rotate.”

You really don’t have to,Quinn said quickly. You’re busy enough.Julian didn’t back down. I said I’d collect. You can start guessing now.Quinn immediately tried to steer away. Aren’t you going to eat?Julian looked at her, not moving. Nice try. Answer the question.

I’m in the middle of eating,” she said, clearly dodging.

Julian gave a small nod. Fine. Then we’ll come back to it.

Quinn hesitated, then said quietly. Then eat with me.

Julian’s expression softened just slightly. Alright.

As they started eating, Quinn couldn’t help but notice how natural he looked doing something as simple as having a meal, everything about him composed without feeling stiff, like it was just part of who he was.

After a short while, Julian shifted one of the dishes closer to her. You’ve gone back to this one a few times. Have more. It’s easy on your stomach.

Quinn looked at him, genuinely surprised.

He had noticed that?

Julian tilted his bowl slightly toward her, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. Your turn. Fair trade.”

Quinn instinctively reached for the serving utensils beside her.

Julian stopped her hand gently. You don’t need those. I don’t mind.
