Chapter 229 Clean Break
“I thought it was Lucy,” Quinn said, a little embarrassed as she brushed her hair back.
Julian didn’t linger on it. “Go get ready, then come cat. We need to head out soon.”

Quinn glanced at the time on her phone, and her eyes widened slightly, clearly not expecting that she had slept in this late. She didn’t say anything else and hurried off, and by the time she came back out, the dining table was already set.
She slowed down when she saw it, her gaze lingering on the food for a second. “You made all this?”
The spread was simple but thoughtful, a bowl of warm oatmeal, a plate of shrimp cocktail, and a few light sides that balanced everything out nicely, more than enough for the two of them without feeling excessive.
Julian gave a small nod. “Yeah. Try it and see if it works for you.”
Quinn sat down, still a little surprised, and as she picked up her utensils, she couldn’t help thinking that Julian was the kind of person who would excel no matter what he chose to do. Running the company was one thing, but even in a kitchen, he would probably stand out just as easily.
She never had much of an appetite in the mornings, yet somehow, when it was his cooking, she always ended up eating more than she normally would. Even so, from Julian’s perspective, it still didn’t seem like enough.
The moment she set her fork down and said she was full, he casually picked up a shrimp cocktail and held it near her lips, clearly expecting her to take another bite.
Quinn hesitated for a brief second, then gave in and leaned forward, taking the bite he offered.
Before she could even process it, Julian used the same fork without hesitation, picking up another shrimp cocktail for himself as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Quinn lowered her gaze almost immediately, chewing slowly, her ears warming.
That… definitely counts as something.
Even if it was indirect.
And then her thoughts drifted back to the night before.
Strictly speaking, what happened last night could barely be called a kiss, because he had only brushed against her lips for a fleeting second, yet somehow that made it harder to ignore.
She couldn’t stop herself from sneaking a glance at him.
Julian noticed right away. “Something on your mind?”
Quinn shook her head quickly. “No, nothing.”
Her expression said otherwise.

Julian could tell she was flustered, and for reasons he didn’t bother to hide, he seemed to enjoy these small, deliberate moments of closeness, especially when they made her react like this.
He set his fork down and stood up. “Let’s go. We’ve got something to take care of”
Quinn followed him out, quiet but composed.
When they reached the entryway, Julian bent down and picked up her shoes without thinking.
Quinn reacted immediately. “I can do it, thanks.”
They got dressed and were just about to leave when Julian spoke again, his tone calm but carrying weight.
“Once everything is finalized today, you’ll be single.”
Quinn nodded, her fingers tightening slightly around her bag.
Julian continued, his voice steady. “After that, there are things we can sit down and talk through properly.”
Her heart skipped, just enough to throw her off balance. “Like what?”
Julian’s lips curved faintly. “You’ll remember.”
For no clear reason, warmth crept up her neck.
They headed out together, and as usual, Julian opened the car door for her before getting in after her, both of them settling into the back seat in silence. The drive didn’t take long, and soon enough, the car pulled up in front of a plain–looking government office building that blended in with everything around it.
Quinn stared at it for a moment, her thoughts drifting without warning.
Back then, when she and Chase got married, there had been no ceremony, no celebration, just paperwork and signatures because he had said he didn’t like unnecessary formalities and didn’t want the hassle.
Even so, at the time, that had been enough to make her happy.
She thought she had finally found a place where she belonged, that she wouldn’t have to feel alone
anymore.
But reality had turned out very differently.
“You’re somewhere else right now,” Julian said, his voice pulling her back.
Quinn blinked and shook her head lightly. “I’m going in.”
Julian nodded. “I’ll be here.”
She reached for the door, but his hand came out and stopped her, fingers wrapping gently around her
arm.
Quinn turned back, confusion in her eyes. “What is it?”
“Don’t back down,” Julian said, his gaze steady. “Don’t let him push you around.”

Quinn met his eyes for a moment, then nodded. “I won’t. Not anymore.”
Julian heard everything she didn’t say out loud.
Before, Chase had done exactly that.
He had never considered himself the kind of man who would interfere in someone else’s past, but in this moment, the thought of it stirred something darker than he expected.
He lifted his hand and lightly ran his fingers through her hair. “Just remember, I’m right here.”
A quiet warmth spread through Quinn’s chest.
She nodded again, quickly this time, because she didn’t want him to notice the slight sting in her eyes.
She turned to leave, but he stopped her once more.
She didn’t turn around this time. “Anything else?”
“No matter what he says,” Julian added, his voice lower now, “don’t let it get to you.”
Quinn let out a small breath, then smiled faintly and turned back to look at him. “Once I’ve made a decision, I don’t go back on it.”
Julian reached out, his thumb brushing lightly beneath her eye. “Then don’t cry over something that isn’t worth it.”
Quinn couldn’t explain that the emotion in her chest had nothing to do with Chase.
She simply nodded, opened the door, and stepped out.
Julian stayed in the car, watching her go, his expression unreadable, though there was a faint tension beneath it.
He knew better than to feel jealous over something that belonged to her past.
Back then, she didn’t know him.
Everything she chose, including those three years with Chase, had been her own decision.
If anything, what mattered now was that she chose to leave.
From this point on, she was free.
And that meant he finally had the right to step into her life, not as a bystander, but as someone who intended to stay.
His gaze followed her until she disappeared inside.
Quinn walked in and spotted Chase almost immediately.
He looked nothing like the version of him she used to know, dressed down in a black athletic set, his hair
