nished
Lucy reached toward her, her tone softening again. “Then come here and give me a hug. My foot still hurts.”
Quinn let out a small breath, the tension easing just a little as she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around her. “Alright, you win.”
Over the next few days, Julian still came by regularly, although not as often as it might have seemed.
He didn’t have that kind of time.
Most of the day, meals were still delivered, and he only showed up in the evenings to cook before leaving again.
One afternoon, while picking at the food that had been delivered, Quinn suddenly looked up, as if the thought had just come to her.
“Lucy, I think I want to learn how to cook.”
Lucy blinked, clearly caught off guard. “Since when? You’ve never liked cooking.”
Quinn shrugged slightly, her tone thoughtful rather than impulsive. “It’s not about liking it. I just don’t want to be completely clueless. I mean, how hard can it be?”
Growing up, it wasn’t
Victor and Elaine didn’t allow her to help out around the house.
It was that they had too many people coming and going, students dropping by, colleagues visiting, a constant stream of guests that made appearances matter more than anything else.
They didn’t want anyone saying they treated their adopted daughter differently.
If Rosalie didn’t have to do anything, then Quinn couldn’t be seen doing chores either.
So they simply never let her learn.
It made them look fair.
And it gave Quinn more time to focus on school, which made them look even better.
The result was simple.
She had no idea what she was doing in a kitchen.
That night, when Julian came over, Quinn stayed in her room on purpose, scrolling through recipe videos, comparing steps, even writing down a simple plan for the next day’s lunch, choosing dishes that looked easy enough not to fail.
It’s just cooking, it can’t be that complicated…
When dinner was ready, Lucy sent her a message.

Chapter 246 Trying to Learn
Lucy sent a message: “Dinner’s ready.”
Quinn came out, ate quietly, avoided looking at Julian, and left as soon as she could.
Inished
After helping Lucy settle in, she went straight back to her room, waiting until she heard the door close before coming out again.
Julian didn’t push.
He didn’t try to start a conversation.
And somehow, that made everything feel even more complicated.
As he was leaving, Lucy couldn’t hold back.
“Julian, what are you even doing this for?” she said. “Quinn… she really doesn’t like you.”
Julian didn’t stop walking. “Focus on getting better.”
Lucy made a face. “No wonder she doesn’t like you. You’re kind of intense.”
Julian glanced at her, and the look was enough to make her shrink back immediately.
“Okay, fine, I’m done,” she muttered.
The next morning, Quinn went to the grocery store in the complex, carefully picking out ingredients she thought she could handle, nothing complicated, nothing that required too much skill.
Back home, she laid everything out like she had seen in the videos, trying to follow each step exactly.
Lucy sat nearby in her wheelchair, watching her with mild concern. “Just be careful, okay? Especially with the knife.”
“I know,” Quinn said, sounding more confident than she felt. “I picked stuff that barely needs prep. Maybe just chopping some green onions.”
She had planned this.
Simple recipes.
No room for disaster.
Julian had been cooking there for days, so the kitchen was fully stocked, everything she needed should have been within reach.
She poured oil into the pan, waited until it heated, then added the chopped green onions, just like the video showed.
The sound hit immediately, a sharp sizzle.
Then she paused.
“Soy sauce…”

She turned toward the cabinets, suddenly realizing she had no idea where anything actually was.
She opened one, then another, scanning quickly, her movements getting faster as the seconds passed.
Behind her, the stove was still on.
The oil was heating.
The pan was already starting to smoke.
“Where did he put it…” she muttered, checking another shelf, then another, her focus completely shifting away from what was happening behind her.
