Chapter 55 A Visit He Won’t Claim

Ever since elementary school, Quinn had been winning academic scholarships year after year. By the time she took the SAT, her scores were high enough to get into almost any top college.

Even so, the couple who raised her had never shown her the slightest bit of affection.

And on top of that, they had their biological daughter standing beside her as a constant comparison.

Now she had married Chase, only to go through something like this.

How was it that every bit of suffering in this world seemed to land on her?

Veronica’s eyes reddened,

She was a tough, accomplished attorney who had handled countless cases herself. Yet Quinn was the first client who made her feel this kind of ache in her chest.

Part of it was what Quinn had been through.

Part of it was simply who Quinn was.

When they arrived at the police station, they went through the required procedures for the day.

The same female officer from yesterday told Veronica that even if the incident could not legally be defined as marital rape, Chase had clearly used violence and caused harm to Quinn.

No matter what, he would face legal consequences.

After leaving the station, Veronica took Quinn straight to a private clinic. Quinn had no idea that the doctor who would be treating her was Gunnar.

The same doctor who had given her an IV on the yacht.

Veronica had no idea the two had met before, either.

She simply felt that hospitals involved too many procedures and too much waiting. Gunnar was highly skilled, and his clinic had fewer patients, so it would not waste too much time.

Quinn’s fever had climbed to a hundred and two degrees Fahrenheit. Her head felt heavy and foggy, and the moment she lay down on the bed, she drifted into sleep.

Everyone in the clinic moved efficiently. A nurse came in and started an IV drip for her.

Veronica called Lucy and asked her to come over and stay with Quinn.

At the same time, Gunnar was in his office making a phone call to Julian.

Not long after, there was a soft knock on the door of Quinn’s hospital room. Veronica assumed Lucy had arrived quickly.

She walked over and opened the door. That was fas

The rest of her words got stuck in her throat. The person standing outside was Julian.

Veronica glanced back into the room. Quinn was still asleep.

Lowering her voice, she said, You showed up without me even making an excuse for you this time?

Julian asked, How is she? Has she woken up yet?

Not yetVeronica paused, then realized something. Gunnar called you?

Julian nodded.

Veronica smacked her forehead. Right. I forgot he works for you now. Quinn’s still sleeping. She probably didn’t get any rest last night, and with the fever on top of that, she just ran into her ridiculous parents earlier too. Do you want to go in and see her?

Julian said, No. As long as she’s okay.

Veronica looked surprised. You didn’t come here to earn some goodwill? I’m telling you, when a woman is sick, that’s when she’s most vulnerable.

Julian glanced at her. I don’t take advantage of people when they’re vulnerable.

So you’re just going to take one look and leave?

Yes.”

Veronica sighed in disbelief. You really are something. If you act like this, she’ll never even know you were here. She won’t appreciate it.”

Whatever I do isn’t for her to see,” Julian said calmly. It comes from my own conscience. Take good care of her.

Veronica shrugged. I actually don’t have time either. I’ve got a case and need to leave soon. I called Lucy. She’ll come over.

Julian frowned slightly. She knows how to take care of someone?

Veronica rolled her eyes. Excuse me, I have a job too, okay? And what makes you think I’m better at taking care of people than Lucy is?

You’re a few years older than she is.

Even if I were ten years older, it wouldn’t matter. Lucy’s close to Quinn. Quinn will feel more comfortable with her.

Julian’s expression relaxed a little.

Since she’s still asleep, you might as well look at her a bit longer,Veronica said with a smile. I’ll head out?

Wait until Lucy gets here,Julian replied. He glanced into the room again. I’ll leave.

But after a few steps, he could not help himself. He turned back and looked toward the room once more. Only then did he stride down the hallway.

Lucy ran all the way to the clinic and spotted Veronica in the corridor.

Veronica! Where’s Quinn? How is she?

Veronica quickly grabbed her arm. Slow down. Let me ask you something first. How much do you know about Quinn’s family situation?

I know everything,Lucy said. Her adoptive parents are complete hypocrites. They go on and on about morals and righteousness in public, but they only respect people with status and look down on everyone else. And that sister of hers is a total snake. Sweet on the surface, but incredibly calculating.

Veronica shook her head. What a mess of a family. I’m in a hurry, so let me tell you about Quinn’s condition first. Take good care of her.”

When Quinn woke up, she felt disoriented for a moment. She had no idea what day it was or where she

was.

Quinn, you’re awake?

Lucy’s voice sounded beside her.

Quinn came back to her senses. Why are you

here?

Veronica had to leave for work. She called me and told me you had a fever.” Lucy leaned closer, concern written all over her face. How do you feel now? Any better? I’ll go get the doctor!

Before Quinn could respond, Lucy dashed out of the room. They were about the same age, both around twentythree or twentyfour, yet Lucy still had the personality of a carefree kid.

Because she had a family that adored her.

The thought of family darkened Quinn’s eyes.

Her parents had never done anything but criticize and suppress her.

No matter how well she performed or how successful she became, they never gave her a second glance.
