Catheleen almost never got drunk.
At home, her family was strict about alcohol.
At work, even if she did have a drink or two at a company dinner, she always knew her limits.
Getting that drunk wasn’t something she normally allowed herself.
Last night, it had only happened because she felt safe with Camilla Green by her side.
She remembered Lambert White showing up. She remembered him driving them home. Beyond that, all the details just blurred together.
She had no clue what happened in the middle. How did Lambert even get the idea she was into women—into Camilla?
There was no way she could call him and ask straight out.
Fresh from the bathroom, Catheleen went to find Camilla first. “Cammie, Lambert drove us home last night, right?”
Camilla nodded, barely looking up. “Yeah.”
“And between when he saw us and when he left, nothing weird happened, right?”
Camilla looked puzzled. “No. Why are you asking?”
Catheleen felt deflated—like someone had popped a hole in her confidence.
She respected Lambert and wanted his approval more than she wanted to admit.
Now he thought she was into women, and she didn’t even know why. Worst part—she had no idea why.
She muttered, “Lambert told Latonia he thinks he misread my sexuality. I swear, I have no clue how he got that idea. It’s not fair. Why slap a label on me out of nowhere?”
Camilla froze with Catheleen’s breakfast halfway in the air.
“Wait, what? He said you… had an issue with that?”
“Yeah. I don’t get it. I respect everyone and their choices, but that’s not me.”
A memory flickered in Camilla’s mind, what happened in the car last night. She had a hunch it was related, but she wasn’t sure.
Could Lambert have decided all that just because Catheleen got a little handsy?
That sounded harsh. And honestly, it didn’t sound like him.
Camilla said gently, “You should just call him and clear it up. Maybe it’s all a misunderstanding. If you talk it out, it might be fine.”
“Awake now?”
“Lambert…” Catheleen glanced at Camilla, then forced herself to continue, “I wanted to ask if maybe you got the wrong idea about me. Also, why the sudden apartment and telling me to move?”
“A misunderstanding? How did I misunderstand you?”
“If you’re talking about me touching Cammie last night… that was nothing. Seriously, girls do that all the time. In college, my friends and I used to be too casual with each other, and I didn’t think about boundaries.” Catheleen looked at Camilla. “If you don’t believe me, you can ask her.”
Camilla hadn’t expected to be dragged in, and she shook her hands nervously.
Catheleen whispered, “Please…”
Then she put the phone on speaker and pushed it toward Camilla.
Camilla took a deep breath and picked up the phone. “Mr. White.”
His reply was quieter than before. “It’s me. So is that normal in your friend group? Did people ever cross your boundaries like that in college?”
Catheleen stared at the phone, totally thrown.
Why did Lambert sound so much softer all of a sudden?
