He always sounded so strict when he talked to her. Was it just her imagination?

Camilla tried to explain. “It’s not like everyone does that, but it’s pretty common. It was meant to be playful, nothing sexual—but I get why you’d see it as crossing a line.”

Catheleen gave her an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

Lambert cut in. “I don’t put my arm around other people’s shoulders.” His voice was all seriousness.

Camilla felt a little lost for words.

Lambert kept going. “Even if you’re just playing, there should be boundaries. Getting too handsy isn’t respectful. Don’t you think keeping a bit of distance is basic manners?”

Camilla nudged the phone back toward Catheleen.

Catheleen spoke up. “But Lambert, that’s normal for strangers or acquaintances. With my roommates—or with Cammie—it’s totally different.”

Lambert’s voice stayed firm. “Close or not, boundaries still matter. Some things are private. Letting your hands wander, is that really polite?”

Catheleen rolled her eyes. “Weren’t we talking about my sexuality? I’m straight—I like men. Isn’t that enough? And as for everything else, Cammie and I know our boundaries.”

Thinking about some of Catheleen’s antics, Lambert’s tone turned icy. “What boundaries? Did your parents teach you to touch people whenever you feel like it?”

Catheleen protested, “But Cammie isn’t just anybody. And she’s a girl. Why is it a big deal if I touch her?”

Lambert raised an eyebrow. “Did you ever stop to think about her feelings?”

Catheleen turned to Camilla and asked, “Cammie, is it really not okay if I touch you sometimes?”

Camilla was starting to pick up on just how much this bothered Lambert. He was so proper, so careful with his manners. He probably thought Catheleen’s behavior was totally beneath her.

So Camilla jumped in quickly. “I think it’s something we should probably pay more attention to. That kind of thing isn’t exactly proper, you know?”

Camilla stayed quiet, which made Catheleen nervous. “Cammie, say something!”

Lambert finally spoke. “I don’t like the idea of either of you being alone right now. If Catheleen wants to rent you a room, at least consider it.”

It would have been easy for Camilla to turn Catheleen down, but with Lambert saying it too, she didn’t know what to say.

Catheleen shook her arm. “Cammie, say yes…”

Camilla could only answer, “I’ll think about it.”

Lambert gave a nod. “Alright. Are you free tomorrow?”

Camilla was caught off guard. “Me?”
