Catheleen looked confused. “Who are you talking to, me or Cammie?”
“Cammie,” he replied.
Camilla felt her heart flutter for a second.
He just called her by her nickname, so naturally, almost like it was second nature. Maybe he was just following Catheleen’s lead, but still, Camilla could feel her cheeks getting warm.
“Oh, Lambert, why do you want to know if Cammie’s free? Is there something you need?”
Lambert said, “Weren’t you going to make me some clothes?”
Catheleen glanced over at Camilla.
Camilla nodded. “I will, but I’ve been swamped lately. Can we push it back a few days?”
“I’m not in a rush,” Lambert replied. “Just let me know when you have time.”
Catheleen jumped in right away. “Don’t worry, Lambert. Cammie always keeps her word. If she promised to make you something, she’ll do it.”
“Alright,” Lambert said, then added, “I’ll arrange for someone to help you move this afternoon.”
Catheleen blinked. “Already? That’s fast.”
Lambert continued, “Also, from now on, don’t share a bed with anyone except your husband.”
Catheleen looked surprised. “Why not? I can’t even sleep with friends?”
“No,” Lambert replied, his voice cold.
“Okay, got it.”
Catheleen had always listened to him.
Since she agreed so quickly, Lambert’s tone gentled a bit. “If there’s anything you like, just tell my secretary. He’ll get it for you.”
She hung up, but all the anger and frustration still bubbled inside.
It wasn’t just that she didn’t want to talk to Daniel. Even thinking about him made her feel sick.
Her phone rang again. She glanced down. Barbara was calling.
Camilla hesitated, but finally answered.
Barbara’s voice burst through the line. “You finally picked up! Do you know how worried I’ve been?”
Camilla gave a tired laugh. “If your worry is just about me staying married to Daniel, thanks, but no thanks. I don’t need it.”
“Camilla, stop being so stubborn. Can’t you see his good side—?”
“Then tell me what’s so good about him. Is it that he married me but always thought about someone else? Is it that he ignored me as his wife for three years? Or maybe it’s when he tried to use me for his own gain and forced himself on me. If he’s really that great, would you like to have him?”
