Barbara looked at Camilla and said, “Listen, I get that you have issues with me. But it’s not my fault he likes me. When I stepped back for you two, I honestly wanted you to be happy. Truth is, if I had been the one to marry him, I don’t think things would’ve turned out like this. He has his faults, for sure, but a good woman can make a man better. If he didn’t become a better person with you, does that not mean you share some of the blame?”
Camilla had heard this kind of stuff too many times before.
It was like when a girl gets hurt late at night. People’s first reaction isn't to blame the person who did it, but to question why she was out so late or what she was wearing. Isn’t the real problem the person who actually did the harm?
Daniel was the one who messed up, but somehow Barbara was twisting it around and making it all Camilla’s fault. It was almost laughable.
But Barbara was out of luck this time. Camilla wasn’t the same girl she used to be. She wasn’t about to let anyone control her anymore.
Camilla said, “Fine, I’ll admit I’m not much of a school. How about you take him for a lesson or two? I’d love to see what kind of star student you end up with.”
Barbara frowned. “Can’t we have a normal conversation? The Whites are a big family. The fact you even got to marry in at all… that’s already really lucky for someone like you.”
“That’s not why I married him, Barbara,” Camilla shot back. “Just like Mom and Dad, if any of you cared about me at all, you wouldn’t still be trying to keep us together after everything that’s happened.”
“You’re too naïve, Camilla. Not every girl marries for love, you know? Most people settle because it’s practical. You know what practical means? It means money. Almost everyone marries for stability or wealth. Only a tiny fraction actually get love, and you think you’ll be the lucky exception?”
“That’s my life, not yours. Stop worrying about me. Maybe spend your energy teaching your own ‘good man’ for a change.”
Camilla ended the call without waiting for a reply.
No way. She was going to take it all back from Camilla, everything she was owed.
Now, her life was finally about to turn around. The minute she married Lambert, nothing would ever stand in her way again.
And Camilla? She could stay stuck in the mess she made forever, never able to crawl out.
Barbara quickly texted Daniel. Be more sincere. Win her over. Women are easy to please—get her some flowers, buy her a gift, show her you care. It works, trust me.
Daniel felt a surge of confidence when he read Barbara’s message. He stopped at a shop, bought another bouquet, picked out some gifts, and went straight to find Camilla.
