Camilla was helping Catheleen pack up her things. Most of it was the usual, just day-to-day essentials and some clothes.
Catheleen paused as she stuffed a t-shirt into a box. “Cammie, now that we’re moving into a bigger place, when are you going to bring all your stuff over?”
Camilla gave her a little smile. “Honestly, I don’t have much to bring. That house… everything in it belongs to the Whites. I don’t even want to go back there right now. Once the divorce goes through, I’ll head back and deal with it.”
“When that time comes, I’m going with you,” Catheleen declared.
That brought a real warmth to Camilla. After everything she’d been through, Barbara’s friendship couldn’t compare—Catheleen’s just meant more somehow.
“Thank you, Catheleen. Really,” Camilla said quietly, “for being here with me. Especially now.”
Catheleen threw her arms around Camilla in a tight hug. “Don’t be silly. What are best friends for? Remember what we used to say? If I never get married, we’ll just grow old together and be each other’s retirement plan!”
Camilla let out a real laugh. “Trust me, you’ll get married someday. But if you don’t, we’re definitely teaming up for a retirement club.”
Catheleen grinned, radiant. “Deal. Honestly, Lambert seems so scary to most people, but he’s not. He’s actually so sweet to me. He even bought me an apartment, can you believe it?”
At the mention of Lambert, Camilla just nodded. She didn’t really want to talk about him.
But Catheleen wasn’t done. “Hey, Cammie, have you come up with any ideas for what you’re going to make for Lambert? You know, the clothes?”
Camilla sighed. The last few days had been too much. “I really haven’t had a chance to think about it,” she admitted.
Catheleen nudged her, a teasing light in her eyes. “Lambert is such an old-fashioned academic. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him wear anything besides a suit.”
She bumped Camilla’s shoulder. “Why not make him something totally different? Make him a daring, sexy, high-fashion outfit.”
Camilla scrunched up her nose. “Sexy? High-fashion? Since when do any of those words fit Lambert?”
Catheleen didn’t buy it for a second. “You’re probably still not over your cold. Give the packing a rest and go lie down.” She all but pushed Camilla onto the sofa. “Did you take Galen’s medicine?”
“Yeah, I did,” Camilla said softly.
“Good. Anyway, the most important thing is getting the divorce done. Cut ties with that loser, then you can think about everything else. When it comes to making clothes for Lambert… don’t you need to take his measurements first?”
The realization hit Camilla like a ton of bricks. “Wait… oh.”
“That’s super important. Lambert is picky about what he wears, you know. The people who usually do this for him come from generations of tailors. But I believe in you, Cammie. You have to do it properly.”
Just the idea of getting close enough to measure him made Camilla’s heart race.
She hesitated. “Catheleen… would it be too much to ask you to do me a favor? Could you get Lambert’s measurements for me?”
