“I must have been out of my mind,” Camilla joked, giving Daniel a wry smile. “Who hasn’t had a thing for a jerk when they were younger? But I’m over it, really. Daniel, don’t put yourself through this. There’s no way we can get back together.”
He just looked at her, something stubborn flickering in his eyes. “I’m going to show you I mean it.”
Daniel took a step back and set his flowers and gifts on the small cabinet by the door. “I’m not giving up, not until you forgive me.”
He left without waiting for a reply. Camilla stared at the flowers and the box he’d left behind, feeling like they didn’t belong there at all.
Just then, Catheleen opened the door. “He’s gone? What did you guys end up saying?”
Shaking her head, Camilla let out a sigh. “Pointless. I’ve decided—I’m pressing charges.”
The whole mess with the police had been swept under the rug before because Jackson asked her to settle in private. But the truth was, Daniel had hit her. No matter what, that could be used in court.
If one lawsuit wasn’t enough to end this marriage, she would just file again. One way or another, she was getting out.

That afternoon, Camilla was supposed to look at apartments. Catheleen had insisted she stay instead. She even joked about charging rent.
Honestly, the new apartment was bigger, so they’d each get their own private space. Plus, Lambert had left her with one request—he wanted Camilla to look after Catheleen.
In the end, Camilla agreed, although she couldn’t help wondering about Lambert. Hadn’t he wanted her out before? Why go through all the trouble of finding Catheleen a bigger place, only to ask Camilla to stay?
The truth was, Lambert had spent a long time thinking it over. At first, he’d totally misread Catheleen’s feelings for Camilla. He thought she had a full-blown crush and was determined to keep Camilla away.
By the time he realized it was nothing like that and Catheleen just wanted a friend, he’d started to hope Camilla wouldn’t move out after all. But he couldn’t have them sharing a bed, either. Even if he didn’t have a problem with their orientations, Catheleen was way too touchy-feely for his comfort.
All those comments, about how soft Camilla was, how nice she was to hug...
Galen handed him a thermometer and waited. Thankfully, his temperature was normal. After a few more quick checks, Galen scribbled out two prescriptions and looked at him. “So, are you just passing by? Or did you come looking for me?”
Lambert hesitated. “Actually, I have something I wanted to ask.”
Before Galen could reply, the door creaked and someone poked their head inside.
“Galen!” Catheleen called out, spotting him instantly.
Galen grinned. “You made it. Where’s Camilla?”
Catheleen reached back, tugging Camilla into the room. “Right here... Lambert, what are you doing here?”
Camilla glanced up, her eyes meeting Lambert’s just as he looked over.
