What was he doing here?
Was this just a coincidence, or something else entirely?
She and Catheleen had moved into the new place Lambert set up for them just yesterday. Camilla had opened a window to air things out, then totally forgot about it when she went to bed. She woke up freezing in the middle of the night. By morning, her head felt heavy and fuzzy.
She shuffled out of her bedroom, still groggy. Catheleen spotted her and immediately knew something was off. She reached over to touch Camilla's forehead and gasped. “You’re burning up again!”
Not even bothering to ask questions, Catheleen dragged her straight over to Galen’s clinic.
Camilla’s head was spinning and she just couldn’t seem to focus. When she finally realized where she was, she was startled to find she’d been staring at Lambert for who-knows-how-long.
She quickly looked away.
Catheleen, meanwhile, was focused on Lambert. “Lambert, what are you doing here?”
Lambert’s eyes hadn’t left Camilla. After another moment, he finally turned away and answered, “I’m not feeling well.”
“What? What happened?” Catheleen suddenly remembered Camilla and yanked her closer. “Cammie’s got a fever, too!”
Lambert’s gaze darted right back to her.
Again? Was she sick again?
He wasn’t surprised, really. Her face was pale and sluggish.
Galen walked in. “Lambert’s fine, just caught a bit of a chill. But Camilla, why are you sick again?”
He grabbed a thermometer and checked her temperature. With a beep, it flashed up at 102.
“I forgot to close the window last night, woke up freezing,” Camilla mumbled.
Galen shook his head. “Seriously, you both did the same thing on such a cold night?”
Catheleen’s eyes went wide. “Wait, Lambert, you forgot to close your window, too?”
Earlier, when Galen asked, Lambert had just thrown that out as an excuse. He never expected Camilla to use the same reason.
Although, she probably really had forgotten the window. His own reason was different.
The real reason he caught a chill was her.
Lambert swallowed, his voice turning even lower. “Check on her first.”
“Well, that’s understandable,” Galen replied. “It means she’s sensitive, maybe even fragile, and what happened on that yacht hurt her badly.”
Lambert nodded. “How can she get past it?”
“Hope you don’t mind me saying this,” Galen said, “but how do you feel about her?”
Anyone could see Lambert was different around Camilla. Even on the yacht, his attitude made that clear.
But looking at Camilla, Galen got the sense she wasn’t interested in Lambert at all. Which seemed crazy, honestly. This was Lambert. There were barely a handful of men like him, not just in the country, but the entire world.
A woman not falling for him? That was almost unheard of.
Lambert shot him a warning look.
Galen grinned. “Come on, I’m just curious. First time you’re actually interested in someone, and…”
Lambert cut him off. “Just help me figure this out. Don’t ask about the rest.”
He didn’t have to spell out his feelings. Galen could see exactly where he stood.
