If he was actually worried about her, didn’t that say everything?
“Write me a prescription,” Lambert said.
Galen stared at him, confused. “Didn’t I already do that?”
“I want an IV.”
Galen blinked, speechless. “With your health, what do you need an IV for…?”
Then it hit him. He burst out laughing. “So, you finally want to try it too, huh? Alright, I’ll hook you up.”
Catheleen led Camilla into the same room they used last time. Not long after, a nurse came to start Camilla’s IV.
Camilla had always been afraid of needles. She’d been alive over twenty years, yet no one had ever seriously cared for her, not really. If you grow up craving love, it’s like you don’t even have the right to feel wronged.
But today was different. Catheleen stayed by her side.
She wrapped Camilla in a gentle hug, soothing her. “Don’t look. It barely hurts. You’ll be fine in no time.”
When Lambert showed up, the door was open and the nurse was already gone.
Catheleen still had her arms around Camilla, gently playing with the tip of her ear and brushing her cheek.
“Cammie, how is your skin so soft?” She refused to let go, grinning. “Seriously, you’re like a perfect little egg.”
She said it, then leaned down and kissed Camilla right on the cheek.
She did stuff like this back in school too. Every time, Camilla would get flustered and blush tomato-red.
Today, though, Camilla was too tired to react. Her whole body felt soft and heavy, completely drained.
“Stop messing around, Catheleen. I’m exhausted.”
Catheleen, satisfied, gently helped her settle into bed. “Okay, get some rest. I’ll—”
She started to stand, but then she noticed someone looming at the doorway. She jumped. “Lambert!”
Camilla forced herself to look over.
Lambert’s face looked like thunder, jaw clenched tight, eyes sharp and cold with something between irritation and anger.
Catheleen’s heart did a backflip.
What on earth was wrong with Lambert?
He looked seconds away from losing it.
Just then, the nurse came back in with a tray.
Catheleen watched, stunned, as Lambert also got hooked up to an IV.
“Lambert,” she whispered, sidling up next to him. “Why are you getting an IV? Didn’t Galen say you were fine?”
Lambert glared at her like she was the most annoying person in the world.
“Don’t you have work today?”
His voice was pure ice. That stare could freeze water.
Catheleen actually felt relieved to have something to say. “My company ran into some trouble. We’re being investigated. Everyone’s panicking.”
Lambert said, “If that company isn’t right for you, why not change jobs?”
“Cammie’s not feeling well. I should be with her.”
“There are doctors and nurses here. They don’t need you,” Lambert said flatly. “Go do whatever you’re supposed to do.”
He was clearly trying to get rid of her.
