Catheleen could be a bit timid at times, but there was no way she could just leave Camilla alone with a fever.
“Lambert, Cammie’s temperature is almost a hundred and three,” she said, voice tight with worry. “I need to stay with her and make sure she's okay.”
Stay with her?
And yet you’re still all over her—kissing her cheek like you own the right.
You literally kissed her face just now.
Lambert’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing. He'd just told Catheleen yesterday to respect some boundaries, and clearly that had gone in one ear and out the other. Meanwhile, not once had he kissed Camilla—ever.
With Lambert glowering, Catheleen decided it was safer to keep quiet. She shuffled over and settled down quietly at Camilla’s bedside.
The nurse left. Both Camilla and Catheleen were getting IV drips, and the whole room settled into a peaceful hush. Camilla, who hadn’t been sleeping well lately, figured she’d take advantage of the quiet and the medication to finally get some rest.
She hadn't expected Lambert to show up, though. When Lambert walked in, the room felt smaller, like her nerves had nowhere to hide. How was anyone supposed to relax with him there?
Still, the medication started to work, and after a while, Camilla couldn’t resist her heavy eyelids. She drifted off.
Lambert worked on his phone, thumb flying. Every so often he murmured a reply into the mic.
Catheleen, bored out of her mind, grabbed her phone and started gaming. She’d barely started when her screen lit up with an incoming call. She scrambled, turned off the game’s sound, and hurried out into the hallway to answer.
A few minutes later, she crept back inside and leaned over to whisper, “Lambert, Latonia needs me to do something for her. Now that Camilla’s asleep, I’m going to step out for a bit.”
Lambert didn't even bother with words. He just waved her away.
Catheleen checked Camilla, glanced at the drip line, and sighed. Still a while to go. She went outside, said a few words to the bodyguards, told the nurse she’d be gone briefly, then hurried out.
Latonia George had called her for a favor, something about picking up some important documents. There was no saying no.
Now that Catheleen was gone, Lambert put his phone aside and turned his attention to Camilla.
Suddenly, Camilla moved, and Lambert jerked his gaze away. Every moment he lost composure, every bit of messy emotion, it was always because of her.
The room was quiet again. Lambert risked another glance, thinking she was still asleep, but this time he looked right into Camilla’s dark, clear eyes.
They both froze, locking eyes for a second. Camilla had that just-woken-up look, cheeks flushed from the fever, her eyes a little slow and confused.
“How are you feeling?” Lambert asked gently. “Any better?”
Camilla blinked, realizing where she was and who she was looking at. She quickly turned her eyes away, her heart suddenly pounding. Why had she been staring at him? And for so long?
“I’m... I’m a bit better,” she said softly.
The truth was, she didn’t feel much better at all. Her throat burned, and her head was thick and foggy.
She glanced at Lambert. Was he feeling as awful as she was? But watching him just now, he looked so calm, even energetic, as if the sickness hadn’t touched him at all.
