Camilla had always thought attraction was complicated—until Lambert sat three feet away and made it feel simple.
Lambert was one of those people who didn’t just look handsome—he had that natural, striking bone structure. His features were deep set, his nose perfectly straight, his jawline sharp and defined, his nose perfectly straight, his jawline sharp and defined.
Camilla had seen plenty of handsome men. Daniel, for example, was definitely attractive.
But next to Lambert, Daniel just faded into the background.
Lambert had more than just a gorgeous face and perfect bones. The way he carried himself, that quiet confidence, put him in another league entirely.
Daniel was good-looking in a way that photographed well; Lambert was the kind of handsome that made you forget to breathe. The difference was massive.
And then her mind betrayed her with a flash of memory—heat, strength, and the way he’d felt impossibly solid beneath her hands.
Oh my god, what on earth was she thinking?
Lambert was staring right at her as her face turned bright red.
He reached over and pressed the call button by the bed.
Galen came in, looking concerned. “Everything okay?”
Lambert told him, “Can you check her temperature? She looks flushed. I’m worried her fever is back.”
Galen noticed too, pulling a thermometer from his coat pocket. “That’s odd... her fever should be down by now, we gave her the meds.”
The thermometer beeped. “99.7,” Galen read, relieved. “Barely elevated.”
“Temperature’s normal,” Galen said, obviously relieved. “Then why are you so red?”
How was Camilla supposed to explain that?
Lambert chimed in. “Maybe the room’s too warm, or the blanket’s heavy? Is it a little hot?”
Camilla quickly agreed. “Yeah, it feels a little stuffy in here.”
Galen grinned. “That’s good, actually. Sweating after a fever means you’re on the mend. Once you’re done with your IV, just wipe yourself down to feel better.”
He glanced at Lambert. “And you? Feeling okay?”
Lambert shot him a look, his eyes saying, Don’t tease me.
He started thinking back to earlier, the moment when Catheleen had kissed Camilla on the cheek.
“How long have you and Catheleen known each other?” he suddenly asked.
Camilla quickly did some mental math. “We met during college. It’s been five years.”
Lambert went on, “Is she always so playful with you?”
Catheleen was a bit childish, always clinging to Camilla and acting all cute.
Before Camilla could answer, Lambert continued, “She’s been spoiled at home. Sometimes she doesn’t know where the line is. You shouldn’t let her cross it all the time.”
Camilla couldn’t help but defend her friend. “Catheleen’s actually really thoughtful.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Thoughtful? You’re telling me you’re fine with her acting out with you like that?”
Camilla was lost. “Mr. White, I... I’m not sure what you mean.”
Lambert just cut straight to the point. “I mean you shouldn’t let Catheleen get so close to you. I saw her kiss you. That’s not appropriate at all, is it?”
