Catheleen’s family background aside, she had everything Camilla ever wanted. Loving parents who cherished her, relatives who cared, friends she could actually trust. She was that kind of girl, bright and bold and sunny, always seeing the good in people. Kindness just seemed to come naturally to her, like she never even had to try.

Camilla looked at her own life, and she couldn’t help feeling a little bit sorry for herself. Her parents didn’t love her, not the way they were supposed to. Her sister? Definitely not the type to stick up for her or treat her with any real affection. The truth was, her parents played favorites, and Barbara—well, Barbara was just plain awful.

And then there was Lambert. To Camilla, he’d been nothing but a stranger, someone who just happened to save her on a yacht one wild day. Now, out of nowhere, he was saying he’d look after her like she was family.

That got to her, no matter how hard she tried to keep her guard up. How did Catheleen get so lucky with family? Camilla wanted someone like that too. She wanted someone in her corner for once.

“Thank you,” she said, her voice a bit shaky. She knew if she tried to keep talking, she’d lose it completely.

Lambert watched her quietly. “You don’t have to thank me,” he said. “If you have questions or need anything, just ask. I’d rather you come to me directly so nothing gets misunderstood.”

Camilla shook her head. “That’s all. Still, I owe you a thank you.”

“If you’re talking about what happened on the yacht,” Lambert said, “then honestly, I should be the one apologizing.”

Camilla glanced at him, trying not to stare, but it was almost impossible. Every time she looked at him, she thought the same thing. This man was ridiculously good-looking.

Lambert’s voice dropped, sincere and steady. “About my behavior that day, I’m sorry. I was wrong. I don’t expect you to forgive me, but I do hope you’ll accept my apology.”

“Cammie?” Lambert called her name, the nickname soft and familiar, and her heart skipped. He was following Catheleen's lead, actually using it.

“You don’t need to say sorry,” Camilla managed. “It was a weird situation, I get it. Sorry for dragging you into all that. Honestly, I was the one who threw you off.”

Lambert nodded. “It was complicated, yes. Still, I should’ve been better about it. To make it up to you, how about I take you and Catheleen out for dinner sometime?”

Camilla started to protest. “You really don’t—”

Lambert cut in gently. “I made mistakes too. So, do I still get that thank-you gift you offered?”
