Camilla had never actually thought Lambert needed that suit she was supposed to make for him. Honestly, even if she finished it, he probably wouldn’t even wear it. He’d just toss it in his closet and forget about it until it was covered in dust.
So why did he still insist she make it?
And now here he was, bringing it up again.
Camilla figured she might as well be upfront. “Honestly, compared to Mr. White, your private designer, my sewing skills are really nothing to brag about...”
Lambert looked at her, his voice calm. “So, you don’t want to give it to me anymore?”
When their eyes met, Camilla thought she actually saw a hint of disappointment there.
Disappointment? Was she just seeing things?
She couldn’t help but think of something Catheleen once said about how Lambert was full of surprises. It wasn’t about the clothes, though. It was the way Lambert’s expression, just now, was so out of step with his usual self.
Just look at the guy. He was tall and strong, all broad shoulders and a trim waist, with a build that put those internet heartthrobs Catheleen was always showing her to shame. And the way he carried himself—it was intense, commanding, like he belonged on some throne, untouchable by anyone else.
How could a man like that ever look disappointed?
But it was there in his eyes, clear as day. Camilla was certain she wasn’t imagining it.
“You promised…” Lambert’s gaze didn’t waver. “Even if I did something wrong...”
“I’m not going back on my word.” Camilla blurted it out before she could help herself. “If I promised, I’ll do it.”
The way he looked at her, almost pleading, made her heart almost skip a beat.
“Pleading” sounded ridiculous, though. That word had nothing to do with someone like Lambert, did it?
“Thank you.” Lambert’s tone was sincere. “I’m really happy.”
Camilla’s cheeks felt hot. She kept her eyes on the floor. “Don’t mention it.”
She was doing her best to avoid his gaze, but she could feel Lambert’s eyes lingering. He didn’t have to say anything—his presence was almost too much.
She remembered Galen’s advice. Take your time, be patient. Don’t try to tear down her walls all at once. Lambert wasn’t rushing. He could finally chase after the girl he wanted. Daniel had basically handed her over himself. Once she was divorced, nothing would stop him from going after her openly.
But for now, he just wanted to gently ease away the fear and hesitation she kept around her heart.
Lambert didn’t have much medication left in his IV, and before Catheleen got back, a nurse came in to take out the needle.
Camilla lay in her bed, restless and uncomfortable. She really needed to use the bathroom, but Lambert was still sitting right there, stretched out on the next bed. He didn’t say a single word, but somehow, she couldn’t ignore him, not for a second.
