Why wasn’t Catheleen back yet? The atmosphere would be so much less awkward if she were here.
Right now, the whole room seemed to be filled with Lambert’s intimidating presence. Even the air was laced with his subtle, cool scent. It was so faint, you almost couldn’t smell it if you tried, but at random moments, it felt like it wrapped all around her.
Camilla flipped over in bed, restless. A few seconds later, she turned back again. She really needed to pee, and it was getting uncomfortable.
“What’s wrong?”
Lambert’s deep, soothing voice drifted over from next to her. Camilla hesitated, embarrassed. Being in front of a man like Lambert, so calm and classy, talking about something so awkward just felt... wrong.
Still, some things you just can’t ignore.
Trying to sound casual, Camilla replied, “I’m fine. I just need to go to the bathroom.”
“Okay.” Lambert didn’t say anything more. He just reached over and picked up her IV bottle.
Alarmed, Camilla tried to climb out of bed fast, but she moved too quickly. The moment her feet touched the floor, she felt dizzy. Her vision blurred, and her body swayed. She was about to fall.
She gasped, bracing for the landing, but it never happened.
An arm caught her around the waist, strong and steady. She could feel the heat of his palm right through her clothes, burning her skin.
Camilla’s thoughts barely caught up. Her body just reacted. Forgetting about the IV line, she pushed both hands hard against the solid chest right in front of her.
Lambert had leaned in to keep her from falling, gripping her waist firmly. Her unexpected shove caught him off guard. He stumbled backwards, but didn’t let go of her.
As he moved, he actually pulled her along with him.
They landed on the bed, Lambert first, sitting at the edge. Camilla, meant to push him away, actually tumbled forward instead, ending up leaning right over him.
Her IV needle ripped out as she went, blood immediately beading up on the back of her hand.
“Cammie!” Catheleen’s voice shook as she hurried to catch her.
Camilla barely made it to the bathroom before collapsing next to the toilet and dry heaving. But she hadn’t eaten anything all day after having a fever, so her stomach only brought up a little water.
Catheleen was panicking now, not knowing what to do, fumbling to press on the bleeding hand. “Cammie! Cammie, what’s happening?”
How did things go from kissing to vomiting in a single second?
She looked up, eyes wild, and spotted Lambert standing helplessly in the bathroom doorway.
“Lambert! Go get Galen, now!”
