Lean Green was calling.
Camilla felt terrible. Her head was heavy, her stomach kept aching, and even her voice had turned rough when she picked up. “Dad?”
“Where are you?” Lean asked straight away. “Come home.”
“I’m sick. I’m getting an IV drip,” she replied. “Is something going on?”
“You’re sick? Is it serious?”
“I just caught a cold and got a fever,” Camilla said.
“A cold doesn’t count as being sick,” Lean grumbled. “Come home once you’re done.”
“If you have something to say, you can just tell me on the phone,” Camilla said weakly.
“Just come back and we’ll talk,” Lean pressed. “What, I can’t even get you to come home now?”
She felt drained to the bone. Camilla didn’t even have the energy to argue anymore.
“Can I come tomorrow instead?”
“You come back tonight. Take some medicine and your fever will be gone. When did you become so fragile?”
Camilla managed a tired, crooked smile. “Alright. I’ll go home tonight.”
After ending the call, Catheleen glanced over. “Was that your mom or your dad? Asking you to go home?”
“My dad. Yeah, he wants me to drop by.”
“You told him you’re sick and he still insists you go back. Does something big happen or what?”
Camilla shook her head. “No idea. I guess I’ll find out tonight.”
Catheleen watched her, sympathy clouding her eyes. “Parents are supposed to treat their kids the same, you know. Even adoptive ones. They raised you, so they owe you care and love.”
Camilla gave a little smile. “Even real parents play favorites. It happens. Don’t be upset… I’m doing fine now, aren’t I?”
“You really are, and it’s only going to get better!” Catheleen leaned closer, her eyes sparkling. “Cammie, the second you dump that jerk and get divorced, I’m setting you up with the best guys ever! Every single one will put Daniel to shame, I promise.”
Across from her, Catheleen looked up from her phone, startled. “Cammie, are you alright?”
Camilla took a long breath in, then let it out slowly.
She shook her head. “I’m fine.”
Why did these things keep happening with Lambert? It had just been an accident, but she really couldn’t handle this kind of intimacy at all. Honestly, she never wanted to see him again. Not even once.
But then there was the thank-you present. She should have just turned him down.
“Cammie?”
Catheleen’s worried voice reached her ears.
Camilla came back to herself and glanced over. “Catheleen, can you find out Lambert’s measurements for me and send them to me later?”
Catheleen’s eyes held a little spark of hope.
