Camilla just stared at them, her expression unreadable. “You’re the ones who raised me. If I turned out impolite, isn’t that on you?”

“She’s not ours by blood, so of course she’s different.” Adah made a show of wiping her eyes. “Look at Barbie. She’s well-read, sensible, sweet. Now look at you. After causing such a mess, you show no shame and you still want a divorce!”

“Don’t air this in public.” Lean said. “Every guy has his faults. Daniel made a mistake, sure, but he’s willing to make it right. That should be enough, shouldn’t it?”

Daniel slid to Adah’s side, ready to soothe her. “Mom, don’t get upset. Camilla’s just stressed. It’s all my doing. I made her mad, so please don’t let this get to you.”

Adah beamed at him. “Daniel, you are exactly the kind of son-in-law I wanted. It’s just Camilla… I really don’t know what to do.”

“Mom, if you think a man who would sell out his wife is such a prize, I honestly have nothing left to say.” Camilla let out a cold laugh. “Guess I’m really not enough for him, am I?”

Adah ended up snapping back, her voice rising. “Don’t be so difficult. Aside from this one slip, what’s so bad about Daniel? He already apologized to you. Just what are you waiting for? You think with your looks and background you’d find a man like Daniel? If it weren’t for our family, he’d never have chosen you!”

Lean spoke up too. “Every man makes mistakes now and then. Admitting it and fixing it is already admirable. Stop making things worse and just accept the peace offering, okay?”

Camilla nodded. “You’re right, I’m just not good enough. I’m the unreasonable one here, immature, always causing trouble. How could I ever deserve such a wonderful husband?”

Then she looked straight at Daniel. “So let’s get divorced.”

She still felt awful—Catheleen had checked her temperature before she left, and it was still hovering around 100°F. Every inch of her ached, yet here she was getting torn down by her so-called family.

Lean huffed. “Trying to talk to you is pointless! No matter what you say, I will never agree to this divorce.”

Without waiting for an answer, she turned to leave.

Adah started to call after her but Lean grabbed her arm, shaking his head.

When Camilla was gone, Lean looked at Daniel. “So, do you still have feelings for Barbie?”
