Daniel didn’t hesitate. “The one I love has always been Barbie.”
Adah’s voice shot up in alarm. “What are you talking about? He’s married to your sister now—how could you even think like that? If people found out, do you know how much gossip there’d be? What would they say about us?”
Lean shrugged. “It’s our life. Why should we care what anyone else thinks? Honestly, Daniel was into Barbie from the start. If Barbie hadn’t stepped aside, there’s no way Camilla would’ve ended up marrying him. Now Camilla wants a divorce, so when that happens…” She paused for a second before continuing. “Look, Camilla took Barbara’s boyfriend in the first place. Now she gets it, that forcing it never works. She messed up, and she’s ready to let Barbara and Daniel have a shot.”
Adah thought it over and couldn’t help but see the logic. “But…”
Daniel jumped in right away. “It’s true! I told Barbie how I felt, and she’s the one who turned me down!”
“Still, no matter how you spin it, this will never sound good. They’re sisters…”
Daniel had other worries on his mind. “Mom, Dad, before anything else, we need Barbie’s okay. I’m all in. I never loved Camilla, that’s why things ended up like this. But if it’s Barbie, I’d give her everything. I’d love her properly.”
Adah nodded. “We believe you. And let’s be real, Camilla’s not innocent in all this. It’s not just your fault.”
Daniel suddenly felt like coming here today was the best move he’d made in a long time.
If he could really end up with Barbie, then who cared about Camilla?
Lean waved a hand. “Let’s call Barbie right now.”
Barbara answered, and the more she listened, the more stunned she became. She just stood there, unable to believe what she was hearing.
“Have you all lost your minds?” her voice came out sharp, almost shaking. “The moment Daniel got together with Camilla, there was nothing left between us. Sisters sharing the same man? How could you ever suggest something like that?”
She remembered Lambert promising to see her in a few days. She was sure he’d confess his feelings then. Once she was with Lambert, Daniel wouldn’t even be in the picture.
She took a breath and spoke as if in pain. “Mom, Dad, there’s just no way. Camilla is my sister, I could never take her man. If someone has to be unhappy, let it be me. Please, don’t make me do this.”
Even though she’d never wanted Daniel, she still needed him around, someone she could keep on a string, ready to do what she wanted.
So of course, she couldn’t sever things completely.
The more she put on this act, the more Daniel would think she was pure and noble. He’d only fall for her harder.
Right on cue, Daniel blurted out, “Barbie, please don’t do this to yourself. Camilla doesn’t deserve a sacrifice like this. If you marry me, I promise I’ll treat you right and love you with everything I’ve got.”
