During dinner, Faust couldn’t help but mention Camilla. “I heard she’s down with a cold. How is she now, is she feeling any better?”
Lambert shot him a frosty look. “How do you even know she’s sick?”
Faust raised his hands in mock surrender. “Relax, I haven’t talked to her,” Faust said. “I ran into Galen and he mentioned she’s been sick—that’s all.”
Lambert stayed quiet, not giving anything away.
Faust stared at him, half incredulous, half amused. “Wow, seriously? I can’t even bring her up anymore? Your possessiveness is off the charts.”
Lambert’s voice was flat. “Stop paying attention to her. Don’t mess with her life.”
“Fine, fine. I’ll stay out of it until you confess your feelings. Happy?” Faust said with a chuckle. “I’m just curious. What made you fall for her anyway?”
Lambert clearly had no intention of answering.
Faust wanted to push more, but Lambert set his fork down with a clatter. “Do you ever shut up? Not even at the dinner table?”
He got up, grabbed his coat, and walked out without another word.
Faust called after him, his voice echoing down the hall. “Hey, what’s your problem? Why are you taking your mood out on me? What did I ever do to you?”
But Lambert wasn’t angry with Faust. He was frustrated with himself.
If only he’d managed to keep things in check that night. Maybe if he’d just cooled her off with cold water right away instead of letting things go further while she was barely conscious, none of this awkwardness would have happened. Now, everything was tangled and messy.
And after what Daniel had done, Camilla’s situation had gotten even worse.
Lambert had already reached out to one of Galen’s colleagues, who suggested talking with Camilla face to face first.
Lambert always thought things through, always put Camilla first. He stayed out of her divorce to avoid any hint of scandal, especially since she was still married back then. If he’d stepped in, people would have gossiped about her, not him. They’d tear apart her reputation without thinking twice.
“So now, does that mean you’re not planning on seeing her for a while?” Latonia asked.
Lambert answered quietly, “Not for now. Just help get the divorce sorted for her.”
When he said he wouldn’t see her, what he really meant was that he couldn’t, not that he didn’t want to.
He’d even bought a yacht just so he’d have an excuse to see her out in the open. He never expected things to go so wrong.
But some things are just out of your control.
If they were meant to meet again, they would. He just never imagined it would happen so soon.
