Divorce Him, Then Dazzle novel Chapter 127

Camilla left the Greens’ house with her head spinning, feeling even worse than before. Cold winter wind whipped around her, stinging her cheeks and cutting right through her coat. Her body was shivering, but honestly, her heart felt even colder than the air.

She had always known she shouldn’t expect anything decent from that couple. Still, every time, they managed to disappoint her in a new way. For the sake of keeping up appearances, to protect their precious reputation, they’d trample all over her feelings and put her happiness at the absolute bottom of their priorities.

Who really cared if she was happy? Did it even matter to anyone?

Another blast of wind made her eyes water, and pretty soon the tears were just rolling down her face. The world suddenly felt so huge and empty, but she had nowhere to go, no one to turn to. She felt the frost on her cheeks, blinked as she came back to herself, and realized snow had started to fall.

Snow started to fall—fat flakes turning the streetlights soft. Suddenly she noticed she’d been standing here in the middle of the street, not moving, for who knew how long. Her feet were completely numb, tingling with cold.

She raised her hand. A snowflake landed in her palm and melted right away. The ones on her coat stuck around for a few seconds, snow-white and fuzzy, sparkling like tiny crystals. She watched them for a while, lost in thought.

Camilla took a deep breath and let the icy air clear her head. The past was behind her. Really, as soon as this divorce was final, she’d get a brand new start.

So what if she didn’t have family anymore? She still had friends—well, kind of. Barbara had already managed to steal most of those. Now she only had Catheleen. And Susan, who had always treated her like family.

Susan really cared about her. Ever since she’d learned to use her smartphone, she’d been sending Camilla voice messages all the time, checking if she’d eaten, inviting her over whenever she could.

Camilla tilted her face up and let the cold, soft snow settle on her eyelashes. It used to feel like her heart was made of ice, but now the world felt a little warmer. Even if some people turned away from her, there was still a corner of the world where she belonged.

With snow swirling down all around, Camilla managed a smile.

Suddenly, her phone rang. She blinked, feeling the chill as snowflakes melted on her lashes, and quickly pulled out her phone. “Susan?”

It was her. Susan’s warm voice came through the phone, inviting Camilla over for dinner—she was making soup and wanted her to eat something hot.

Camilla’s voice was apologetic but warm. “Susan, I’d love to. I miss you. But I’m fighting off a bit of a cold… It’s not bad, really, but I don’t want to risk passing it to you. Can I come by once I’m better? Please, don’t worry, I promise it’s nothing serious.”

Their concern was genuine, and for a second, Camilla felt her eyes sting with tears. She looked down and sipped the hot water, trying to hide her red eyes from her friends.

When she looked up again, there was a gentle smile on her face. “I’m feeling much better, promise. And I took my medicine.”

Latonia patted the couch beside her. “Sit down. Let’s talk about your divorce.”

Catheleen scooted in across from her, her eyes bright. “Cammie, you know I follow a bunch of celebrities online, and I’ve gotten to know some pretty big influencers. Catheleen lowered her voice. “If we have to, we can go public. We can talk to reporters, control the statement, and put real pressure on him. Public pressure will force Daniel’s hand. He’ll have to go through with the divorce once everyone’s watching.”

Latonia nodded. “I’ve been thinking about it, too. If you’re okay with people finding out, and Daniel’s going to be this shameless about everything, maybe it’s time to go a bit more hardcore. Otherwise, he’ll just keep thinking you’re easy to push around.”

For the first time in a long while, Camilla felt hope blooming quietly inside her. Maybe this really could be a fresh start.
