Camilla looked a little unsure.
Latonia tilted her head. “What’s on your mind?”
“I’m waiting to hear back from Daniel’s dad,” Camilla replied quietly. “All the drama, the gossip, it’ll fall on his family’s company before it even touches Daniel. His father’s treated me well from the beginning… I just—”
Latonia gave her a nod. “I get it. Let’s wait and see where his dad stands before you make any big decisions.”
“Yeah, that sounds good,” Camilla said, relief in her voice. “Thank you, Latonia. I really mean it, you’ve helped me so much.”
Latonia grinned. “Hey, don’t thank me, it’s nothing. You’re Catheleen’s best friend, so that makes you my friend, too.”
Really though, Latonia owed Lambert a favor. He’d poured an absurd amount of money into her father’s company like it was pocket change.
The way Lambert went after someone was seriously next-level. The kind of relentless that would freak anyone out… Not that Camilla had any clue.
Watching Camilla, Latonia felt a wave of envy. Sure, Camilla had a rough start—tough childhood, cold adoptive parents, a miserable marriage, a husband who just didn’t care. But all of that would fade, eventually.
Better things were waiting for her. Lambert would make sure of it.
Latonia didn’t stop to ask what Camilla wanted—she assumed rescue was the same thing as love.
From her perspective, who could ever say no to someone like Lambert? If Camilla had any sense at all, she’d be with him sooner or later, and life after that would be one big fast-track to happiness.
Camilla, of course, had no idea what went through Latonia’s head. She just picked up on her kindness and appreciated it.
Catheleen chimed in, “Well, Cammie needs to rest. Latonia’s already ordered food, so when it gets here, I’ll come wake you up for dinner, okay?”
Camilla nodded. Exhaustion showed in every movement. She said a few more words, then headed off to the bedroom.
Catheleen shook her head. “I don’t know. Cammie’s not materialistic.”
“She doesn’t have to be,” Latonia insisted. “She has eyes, right? Even without all the power and money, Lambert’s looks would make anyone swoon. And have you seen his body? Come on, not many men have that going for them.”
“You always go on about Lambert’s good side, but Cammie isn’t shallow,” Catheleen said firmly. “Who someone is on the inside matters way more. Lambert’s cold, doesn’t joke around, never really smiles. If Cammie dated him, she’d just be bored out of her mind.”
Latonia rolled her eyes. “You’re underestimating him. He’s not going to treat a girlfriend the way he treats us. It’d be totally different.”
“I just can’t picture Lambert in a relationship,” Catheleen admitted. “He’s gorgeous, sure, but honestly, sometimes he scares me. Cammie’s intimidated by him, too… She’d never agree to be with him.”
Latonia leaned back. “Don’t overthink it, and definitely don’t say a word about his feelings to Cammie. Let it play out on its own.”
Catheleen nodded. “Okay. So, Latonia—how have you been?”
