Camilla got up and started packing her things. “It’s okay. I drove myself here,” she said.
Ladd looked out at the swirling snow. “It’s snowing again. The roads are probably icy by now,” he said. “I’d be worried if you went home alone. If you’ll let me, I’d feel better making sure you get home.”
He put it so sincerely that Camilla couldn’t argue. She just nodded. Ladd called his driver, walked her downstairs, and made sure she got into his car.
By the time she got home, it was already eleven thirty.
Catheleen yawned as she watched Camilla slip off her shoes. “What took you so long?” she asked.
“We went through several ideas before he was satisfied,” Camilla replied. She glanced at her friend. “Are you tired? Why didn’t you go to bed?”
“I didn’t nap at lunch, so I’m exhausted. I just wanted to see you get back safe.” Catheleen rubbed her eyes. “Now I can sleep.”
Camilla didn’t head to bed. She wanted to get her thoughts down while they were still fresh, so she hustled to tidy up her design drafts again.
She sent the new sketches to Ladd first thing in the morning. Then she called Jackson.
Before she could even say hello, Jackson launched in. “Camilla, what’s going on? Daniel says he can’t find you anywhere.”
It had been almost five days since she and Daniel last spoke.
He didn’t know they had moved or where they went. He’d tried Catheleen’s old loft—knocked on the door with no answer until a neighbor told him they were gone. Calls went ignored. Messages, too. Daniel had finally run out of patience.
So when Camilla called, Jackson wasted no time, his voice filled with reproach. “You can’t just disappear, no matter what happened. Things have to be settled. You won’t pick up his calls or reply to his messages. He doesn’t even know where you’re staying. How’s anything supposed to move forward with your divorce?”
Jackson let out a heavy sigh. “Do you really have to be this absolute?”
“You’re the ones forcing me. He did something so disgusting, and I’m supposed to act like nothing happened? I value my life too much for that. Just being near him makes me feel physically sick. The idea of spending the rest of my life with him is unbearable.”
Jackson seemed to frown through the phone. “Camilla, are you so desperate for a divorce because… you’ve got someone else?”
Camilla almost laughed. “You can’t just throw out accusations like that because you feel like it. Even if you’re older than me, you can’t just make things up.”
Jackson insisted, “I wouldn’t accuse you without reason. Someone called me about it already.”
Camilla was taken aback. “What?”
