At first, he didn’t bother looking down at the first floor. The bar belonged to a friend, and tonight was Garrison Lane’s birthday. Since Garrison loved a party and Faust was always in the mood to join the fun, he tagged along.
Everyone was gathered upstairs. Faust stepped out to answer a call, barely paying attention to the noise below. But then the shrieks and squeals kept coming, making him glance over the railing. That’s when he spotted Camilla.
Bars like this were packed with people—plenty of men and women dressed to get noticed. Still, it was Camilla who caught his eye, instantly and without effort.
Good-looking people always had that extra bit of charm. Out of everyone, she was the fairest, the one who really stood out. Even the way she stood seemed brighter and softer than everyone else.
Then he noticed who was with her. Of course, Catheleen was right there. She’d already climbed up on stage and was shamelessly feeling up the male model’s chest.
Faust, halfway through stashing his phone in his pocket, changed his mind. He pulled it back out and called Lambert, not hesitating for a second.
Lambert picked up quickly. He sounded less than thrilled. “Do you even know what time it is right now?”
Faust grinned. “You’re still up?”
Lambert always ran on a strict schedule, almost clockwork. Unless there was some overseas meeting or something with a weird time zone, he’d be in bed before midnight. Up before sunrise, off to run or work out, and had done so for years. Faust really admired his discipline. He checked the time again. Yep, Lambert should have been asleep.
“Got an international call tonight?” Faust asked.
“No,” Lambert said, sounding tired. “I was about to go to sleep. What’s up?”
“If you’re still awake, you should come down to the bar.”
“Are you out of your mind?” Lambert snapped. “It’s late. Why would I come to a bar?”
Faust laughed. “Suit yourself. But guess who I see down here? Camilla. And, oh look, Catheleen’s here too. Well, well…”
Catheleen was beside her, screaming and laughing, absolutely loving the attention. The MC grabbed Camilla’s phone, stretched his arm out, and snapped a photo of the three of them. As the model leaned in closer, Camilla forced herself to stay still, but inside she was just wishing it was over.
By the time the photo was done, she had gone noticeably pale. Catheleen was still hyper, but Camilla quickly took her phone back. “I’m going to the bathroom.”
“Don’t take forever! There are more cuties coming up!” Catheleen yelled after her.
Camilla was completely uninterested. She honestly didn’t get it. After meeting someone like Lambert, how could Catheleen still be excited by random guys on stage?
The rest of the crowd was glued to the performance, so the hallway to the bathrooms was unusually empty. Camilla stepped out again, drying her hands, eyes lowered and lost in her own thoughts. Suddenly a guy with a massive belly walked straight toward her, face annoyed.
“What took you so long!” he blurted out.
