“What the hell are you dodging for? Come on, get over here!” The man slurred, his words sticky with alcohol, reaching clumsily for Camilla.
His face was flushed red, his eyes cloudy, and it was obvious he was completely wasted. Camilla stepped aside just in time, her whole body tightening with disgust.
He could barely keep her in focus, swaying as he glared at her blurry outline. When he realized she was keeping her distance, his mood flipped in an instant. “Why you acting all uptight?”
Camilla kept her voice cool and steady. “Sir, you must have confused me with someone else. I don’t know you.”
“Drop the act.” He staggered closer, waving his hand like he owned the place.
The smell hit her—a sour blend of booze and sweat—and Camilla’s stomach threatened to revolt. She tried to step around him, but he shifted, blocking her escape. He was huge and sweaty, practically a human wall right in front of her.
A wave of nausea hit her, but she stayed calm and tried to duck past him. Suddenly, his fat fingers closed around her arm.
“Let go of me!” Panic and irritation crashed through her in equal measure.
Catheleen had promised this bar was safe, said it was a chill place to relax. No drama, just a night out. Camilla trusted her, but now, all she had was regret—and a drunk idiot blocking her path.
She yanked against his grip, but he lurched even closer, his breath hot and foul. Camilla had just opened her mouth for help when a sudden howl split through the noise.
The man fell back, clutching his head. In an instant, a long, toned leg snapped out and caught him right in the gut. He stumbled backwards, toppled, and crashed to the ground with an ugly thud.
A tall woman dusted her hands off, then planted them on her hips. She was fast, confident, and in a sleek black slip dress that showed off her striking figure. “Seriously, are you deaf?” she snapped. “She said she doesn’t know you. Stop using being drunk as an excuse to be a creep!”
Camilla’s heart was pounding. She’d seen it all—a flash of hair-grabbing, a kick, and now the man was a heap on the floor. The woman’s face was elegant and bold. She turned to Camilla with a warm smile.
“Hey, you okay?”
The words pulled Camilla back. She swallowed hard and forced her nausea down. “Yeah. I’m fine. Thank you so much.”
“Are you here alone? It’s a magnet for drunken weirdos. Want me to help you outside?” She tipped her head and waggled her brows, her tone half-serious, half-playful.
“No, I’m with a friend, but really—thank you.” Camilla spoke quickly, her voice full of relief.
“Cammie, what took you so long?” Catheleen’s worry was written all over her face.
Camilla didn’t want to stress her out. “Nothing big. I just made a new friend.”
She introduced the two women.
Paulina was quick to jump in. “Hey! Happy to meet another gorgeous lady.”
Catheleen grinned. She took to Paulina right away. “You’re beautiful, too. Since we’re all friends now, let’s stick together and have fun!”
The three of them headed off toward the stage, laughter spilling out as they talked. Halfway there, Camilla stopped in her tracks.
Catheleen glanced back, puzzled. “Cammie, what’s wrong?”
Camilla blinked, unsure if she was seeing things. “I think… I just saw Lambert.”
