“What? Where?” Catheleen gasped, her eyes wide.
Then she spotted him, too.
She nearly jumped out of her skin, grabbing Camilla’s arm and whirling around. “Cammie, let’s go. Now.”
Camilla hurried after her, confusion written all over her face. “Wait, what’s going on?”
Paulina was right behind them as they hurried back the way they came.
“If Lambert finds out I went to a bar, and brought you with me, he’ll lose it,” Catheleen blurted out, her voice rushed and panicked. “Why is he here? Seriously, why?”
Camilla could feel the nerves spreading through her. “Oh no. What do we do?”
Had Lambert seen them already? Too late to wonder, a deep, cold voice sounded behind them.
“Catheleen.”
The three girls froze in place. Catheleen squeezed Camilla’s hand, whispering, “Cammie, save me.”
Paulina was the first to glance back.
She couldn’t help it. That voice was way too attractive. She had to see what kind of face matched it.
When she saw Lambert, she let out a low, appreciative whistle.
Camilla and Catheleen both turned to stare at her.
Paulina flashed a grin. “Sorry, couldn’t help myself. He’s ridiculously good-looking. So, who is he? Someone’s secret boyfriend?”
Catheleen quickly shook her head. “He’s my cousin…”
“Catheleen.” Lambert said her name again, his tone all warning.
Catheleen spun around, her shoulders shrinking in. “Lambert, what are you doing here? It’s late. Don’t you ever sleep?”
He fixed her with a look. “You’re out late too. Didn’t I tell you when I dropped you off to get some rest?”
“I…” Catheleen had nothing. She just squeezed Camilla’s hand tighter.
Camilla didn’t dare say a word. The chill in Lambert’s voice was enough to make her shudder.
Paulina, on the other hand, met his stare and spoke up. “Aren’t you being a little intense? Catheleen’s not a kid. It’s just a bar, she’s allowed to have fun.”
Catheleen jumped on the chance. “Yeah, exactly! I barely ever go out. We were already about to leave!”
She walked away, but after a few paces she spun around, blew them a kiss, and swayed off into the crowd.
As Lambert was about to say something else, Faust appeared. “You got here fast. Come on. Let’s go upstairs and hang out.”
He paused to say hi to the girls. “Hey.”
Catheleen gave him a wave. Camilla nodded politely.
Lambert said, “We’re not going up. I need to get them home.”
Faust shook his head. “No way. It’s Garrison’s birthday. You can’t just skip out now, you have to come say hi.”
Then he draped an arm around Catheleen’s shoulders, guiding her toward the stairs. “Come on, Catheleen barely ever hangs out.”
Catheleen gave in. “Alright, we’ll just say hi and then leave.”
“Deal!”
Faust led them away.
Lambert knew exactly what Faust was doing. He was giving him and Camilla a chance to talk, and honestly, he didn’t really mind.
