The bar had a fat deck of cards just for drinking games, thick enough to make you nervous. Whoever landed on got to draw a card and answer whatever wild prompt was written on it.
Catheleen was half-whispering the game rules into Camilla’s ear, but people were already shouting and laughing, eager to get things started. By the time Catheleen looked up, the bottle was already pointing straight at Camilla, like it had a vendetta.
“Cammie, pick truth,” Catheleen blurted before anyone could even suggest a dare.
She knew the dares could get out of hand, some of them outrageous or completely over the line. Other people might get a kick out of that sort of thing, but Camilla wasn’t the type. Catheleen was just trying to look out for her.
Camilla hadn’t even planned on joining in, but Catheleen had wrangled her into the corner booth. And now, on her first round, the spotlight was already on her.
“I’ll go with truth,” Camilla said, almost as if she didn’t have a choice.
She sat tucked away with Catheleen on her left. To her right, the only thing offering protection was the chunky armrest of the sofa.
Lambert was next to Catheleen. As soon as the bottle pointed at Camilla, something changed in his eyes, a look that was hard to read.
Out of everyone here, only Faust and Garrison actually knew Camilla. To the rest, she was a stranger, probably just a friend Catheleen brought along. Except she’d come upstairs with Lambert. And everyone knew Lambert never brought women to these things. He wasn’t the type to be caught following anyone, let alone a girl, up the stairs with a calm, almost patient mood.
No one dared ask about her. Lambert didn’t introduce her, so everyone kept their curiosity to themselves. But when it came to playing games, all bets were off.
Garrison remembered the first time he saw Camilla. She’d stunned him, honestly. Now that she was this close, he could really see her. Her face was almost too pretty, her skin flawless in a way that made you wonder if she was real. No wonder Lambert…
He smiled, holding out the stack of cards. “Alright, pick one.”
Camilla could feel everyone’s eyes on her. Still, it was Lambert’s stare that made her skin tingle, like his gaze was a warm hand pressing gently against her shoulder. She felt it, as ridiculous as that sounded.
Trying not to fidget, Camilla reached out, her hand graceful and fingertips just brushing over the cards before she picked one.
Garrison grabbed her card, read it, and burst out laughing before he even managed to read it aloud.
Faust, always impatient, leaned forward. “Come on, spit it out already.”
Garrison shot Lambert a quick look, lifted an eyebrow, and finally read the question. “When was the last time you had sex?”
But she glanced at Catheleen and saw how much fun she was having, eyes bright, big grin on her face. Camilla didn’t want to ruin that for her.
So, she said, “I haven’t. Not recently.”
Her face stayed calm, her eyes steady, no hint of embarrassment.
People broke into whispers, curiosity bubbling up all over again.
Garrison grinned, leaning in. “So, not recently, or…?”
Camilla tried to ignore all the eyes watching her.
“Not recently,” she repeated.
Someone insisted, “Come on, we need details. You’ve got to give us a real answer.”
